Mysterious swollen underbelly blob

My 11 year old Arizona Mountain King, Picasso, has a huge swollen underbelly blob, right at his thorax (between heart and lungs). A few hundred dollars later, Vet found it full of fluid and had me inject antibiotics into him for a few weeks with no results. It actually got a bit bigger. Now Vet wants to surgically open it, to try and find the cause. I prefer holistic medicine, and hope someone has some ideas on how I can approach this without spending hundreds of dollars more for surgery. I'm trying betadine soaks. Any ideas?
