I just recently put together a setup for my first ball (just bought him on friday, spent the week before setting up the tank)...i had some trouble during the setup phase with overall temps heres how I ended up setting everything up:
thermostat+uth with temp. probe located directly above uth on substrate.
75watt Infrared heat bulb hooked to a dimmer positioned about 6 inches above the tank in the middle, slightly angled towards hot side.
100watt incandesant about 12 inches above the tank on the hot side.
the infrared stays on all the time. I have it dimmed down quite a bit but it keeps the overall temps around 80.
during the day the 100watt raises the hot side to about 89 (my snake seems to like it a bit cooler than most bp sites recommend) and because it is so high above the tank it does not raise the cool side temp up at all (it stays at about 79-80 due to the infrared).
The thermostat is set to run at about 88-89 so all day it does not come on.
at night the 100watt is off, hot side temps drop and the uth keeps a localized hot spot of about 88-89 while the cool side drop to about 76-77 due to the drop in room temp. the infrared ensures things do not go below 75 (thats the lowest ive seen it and that was when my apartment thermostat was set at 68-69 which is really cold).
hopefully this will give you some ideas...i think the key is the infrared lamp. It keeps the ambient temp up right where my snake likes it and I can adjust it with a fair degree of precision via the dimmer.
