Blood Python

Hi , I am considering getting a young blood python or Borneo short tailed python . I have experince with the care and husbandry of many types of snakes and the time , room and money to care for a snake like this and I would purchase a captive bred specimen. I was just wondering if you could tell my your opinion on these snakes and their care . I also was wondering the enclosure size ? I am in the prosess of building a enclosure for my BCI so that would be 5Wx2Dx2H and I could make it with a cage on top and on bottom but I was wondering if the sizes worked for an adult blood . Also I breed rabbits so if I got a blood or a borneo short tailed python would I be able to feed it rabbits(pinkies , fuzzies ect.) as a regular meal .Also what is the average price for a baby blood python and a baby borneo short tailed python . Thanks and sorry for all the questions .

Borneo's, retail, go for about 400-450ish. That ive seen. Not sure about the bloods.

For a blood, I would say a 4x2x2 is a good size. For a borneo, maybe a bit bigger as ive seen some large borneos. Another 5x2x2 stacked on your boa's cage might just be better either way for both species.

Rabbits are fine if he'll go for them, deffinetly. A jumbo rat wont be big enough when they're adults, so if you could get him on rabbits then go for it.

borneos are generally smaller than sumatran right?

normal bloods males are like 3-5 or something and male borneos are like 2-4.

Caging, bigger is obviously better. For bloods, they dont need any height at all, 18" is the highest I'd build a blood cage, 1ft is fine IMO and IME.

For bloods, I'd got anywhere from 5x2 and up. I've got a 5.5-6ft female blood thats 17-18lbs, and shes in a 6x2.5ft.

Borneos, anywhere from 4x2 and up.

Henry Piorun could help you, he has some great looking bloods and Borneos.
If starting with a hatchling, i suggest a rubbermaid for the first year with either.
They keep the humidity perfect for bloods[ 80-90 percent] and it gives them a much needed feeling of security[ tight, smaller space].

I'm sorry but I have to disagree on the subject of jumbo rats not being big enough. I have raised quite a few bloods and short-tails and continue to produce some with outstanding results feeding the adults only large to jumbo rats. Rabbits are a good food source when available, however, feeding bloods on rabbits exclusively will only increase the likelihood of obesity in your blood. I received a couple of years ago, a couple of black blood adult females that were raised on rabbits, and they are the largest black bloods I've ever seen. They are not only long, but were also, over weight when I received them. My opinion, keep them on smaller food prey and they will thrive in a much healthier state with the potential to produce off-spring.

Fun snakes, but they don't require much space as they are fairly inactive snakes. I kept mine in 4x2x1 cages. They require as little vertical space as you want to give them, as they will not climb at all. The 5x2 floorspace you metnion would be fine, and provide additional room if you wanted to to add hides, etc.

I agree with Angel, my adults did perfectly fine on large or jumbo rats. You could feed them rabbits however, if they are willing to take them.

Expect to pay $150 - $350.

They are fun snakes, but definitely not for everyone. They are unbelievably powerful, awkward to handle, have an incredible bite, and are definitely not all talk- oh, and did I mention lightning fast? 25 or more pounds of snake doing backflips while striking at you can be a bit intidimidating to many people

If you feel you can deal with that and provide them with the proper care... have fun! They are really rewarding to keep!

As for the comment about Borneo's reaching lengths of two to four feet, you will want to avoid any snakes like that. They will exceed two feet in their first year alone. My adults were all over the 5' mark.

Unless its a really long blood, IMO it shouldn't be that big. I had a 25lb female blood that was 6ft, she was fat. I always stress the weight factor with bloods. Dave Barker says 95% of the bloods he sees on the internet are too fat.

Also, im with Angel and Linds on the rat comment. Thats what I feed my bloods. The Barkers(VPI, biggest blood producers) feed their bloods rats(smaller than jumbo, cant remember the size though) once a week I think it was or so. Only about 25 meals a year on average.
