Saimr

Need SAIMR(South African Institute for Medical Research) polyvalent antivenom for stock (x>10 vials). How to acquire in or into Malaysia? (further details on the antivenom such as price and dosage is highly appreciated). Thanks.

regards

Not sure about Malaysia, but I would contact the manufacturer as to aquiring it or finding a local distributor. Expect some government red tape. Administration instructions will be in the package insert.

Like BW said, I have no clues what kind of restrictions there are in Malaysia (though I seem to remember someone from there saying that exotics were not allowed, are you sure you can legally keep that Bitis?) for antivenin, but here is SAIMR's webpage (now called South African Vaccine Producers, SAVP):

http://www.savp.co.za

EDIT: Oh, and last I heard, the price was around US$40-60 (no idea what that translates to in Malaysian currency) per vial...dirt cheap (and a pretty effective AV to boot). The price to get it shipped overnight and refrigerated is what you'll have to worry about

I hope when you said you were just kidding, you meant about the freehandling part as well as the heaven and hell bit...

In any case, even if you are planning on freehandling your Bitis, I'll refrain from jumping on a soapbox about it. You live in Malaysia, if you are to be bitten and die, it's unlikely any negative ramifications (like legislation) will be caused over here (in the U.S.). And that's the only reason I ever really say anything: because I don't want stupid people to compromise the hobby for me and other responsible keepers.

In all honesty, if you decide to freehandle, you deserve anything you get as a result.

btw the snakes are currently prohibited in Malaysia. in fact all imported non native venomous snakes/lizards/etc reptiles were totally banned from Malaysia approximately 1 half months back (laws are gazzetted as we speak) . i got mine from a trader who acquired them in September 04 (according to the CITES import permit). so mine are legal (i even have the certificate from the wildlife dept in Malaysia to justify my claim). those specimens available in the market after the 01/11/2004 are not legal. FYI!

Okay, cool, just making sure. With all the idiots out there who do freehandle, it's sometimes hard to tell when someone is joking and when they are serious No hard feelings I hope.

And I had just heard from someone else in Kuala Lampur (sp?) that exotics were illegal, that's why I asked. Great snakes for sure, be careful and have fun.

no frets. just curious...r u sure this guy is a Malaysian? i too live in Kuala Lumpur but from my knowledge and experience we (Malaysian) don't prohibits exotics. as long as the animals are not CITES1 (eg. Malaysian blood python included) or non native venomous serpents (effective as at 1st Nov 2004), the trading of exotics are legal.

the only country in South East Asia that prohibits exotics of any kind is Singapore. This is due to the clashing between animals and human whereby land and forested areas are scarce. There were reports (in Singapore) that a retic appeared out of nowhere at a 19th storey luxury condominium. after further investigation by the wildlife dept of singapore (once they caught the serpent), it turns out that the retic actually came out from the toilet bowl, which was connected to the underground sewer whereby the snake had been feeding on sewer rats. IMO the singaporeans are prohibiting imported exotics due to the reason that they can't even manage their own (exotics).

although CITES1 fauna/flora are banned from being traded, they are still constant supplies in the market (underground)...even in Singapore. Most of the suppliers came from Thailand and Indonesia (my apology to the Thais and Indons) through illegally means (which i don't know what and how). FYI.

Note: the info was made available by the Perhilitan Malaysia (= U.S. Wildlife and Fisheries). a.ka. one of my many friends.

Regards

Yeah, I'm sure he's from Malaysia...posts over on the venom doc forums, goes by Yasin. Nice guy. I just remember him mentioning that exotics were illegal in Malaysia. Of course, he could have been wrong. I wasn't speaking to the Minister of Malaysian Affairs or anything,
