Herp Tracking Software - I need your input!

Hi everyone,

I am in the planning stages for creating a new herp/pet tracking program and would like your input!

I currently work as a developer at a computer co. We specialize in database apps for business operations. Our main app is totally customizable and can be setup for any purpose fairly quickly.

Personally I have found myself overrun with index cards and spreadsheets. They help, but I still cannot find what I am lookin for quickly. So I have decided to create a custom version of our software that is customized specifically for herps for now and pets in general at a later date.

I have an idea of a feature set for now, but I would really like your input. What is your wishlist for herp tracking software? What reports would you like to be able to run (weight gain history, bloodline tracking, shed history, etc.).

This will be a commercial app, but we plan on offering it with various feature levels and upgradeable modules to make it available to everyone from the hobbyist to the serious breeder/pet store owner.

I plan on working closely with this community on this project and I would very much like to make sure it satisfies everyones requirements and is easy to use. I look forward to hearing your ideas!

I currently use hungry herps. It's a great program. A few things that would by nice to see in a tracking program. First thing is updateing. I don't keep my computer in the herp room. If a program would compatable with palm os. You could update on the palm in your herp room while feeding and cleaning. I don't know how hard this would be to do. Second thing would be to help track your animals. Being able to download dig. pictures of your animal. This would help with breeders as well as the offspring you sell. Third would be a POS recipt printout with all history, feeds, shed hx, ect. These may not be practical to program for you, but I think these would be new features that would set the program apart from the ones on the market today.

I will have to look into palm compatibility. But I agree it would be nice to have.

What you mentioned as far as a pos receipt with the history, I have planned. I thought it would be good for breeders to be able to present a complete history of the animal with info about it's parents, weight and shed history, etc.

Pictures would also be integrated into the app as well.

Keep the ideas coming! I'm putting together a tentative feature list that I will post soon as well.
