What do you get when you cross a normal with a het? Thanks!

Ummm... I'm assuming that this works the same way with snakes as with leos...

What you'd get is 50% normal babies, without the trait -- and 50% normal babies, het for the trait. No way of telling them apart, without breeding them to either a known het, or an animal displaying the trait.

You get normals, that are 50% POSSIBLE for being het, but you'll never know until you breed them. The absolute most time-consuming and inefficient way of trying to get a morph. But, if you don't have the funds.......

Heh okay, I was debating with someone. Is it possible, in a million years, to get an albino from that cross? I'm pretty sure it's like 0,001% percent (from multiple "alleles" sorry I go to a french school :P).
But if I;m wrong I want to know!

A possible het is exactlly what this cross will give you. And with 66% possible hets it is not that bad as long as you own at least one animal that shows the trait you want. This is especially true with ball pythons if you can buy an entire clutch.. I for one will never buy 50% possible hets way too much work.

your best 'cheap' way to go is to purchase a 100% male het and if you like other less than 100% het females. A 1:3 ratio gives you fair odds of producing a morph. Het to Normal breedings give you all normals with some possibly being het. This way even if all 3 females were normal some of the F2 will probably be het and give you morphs in the F3. If you do get het females you have the 25% possibility of morphs in the F2. Some folks prefer breeding hets, though usually 100% het X 100% het or 100% het X morph, because there have been suggestions the pure albinos have lower breeding dependability or fertility. Not sure the research supports that thought but it is there.

With the albinos that used to be true about the fertilty. Now there is not alot of problems. I know many people that have produced albino X albino. I do not care for het X possible het breedings. Because you cannot rule out the non hets in the first year. There is always the chance that you get unlucky and do not produce the trait you want. If you have a animal that shows the trait you can rule out the possible hets in the first year. Nobody has that bad of odds.

Zoe, as far as getting albino with that combination. ANYTHING is possible. But in reality if your going to bet money on it. Not a chance. Unless the normal is secretly carrying the gene for what ever your trying to get. You will only produce normals some of wich carry the gene but do not exhibit the homozygous trait. Plus you can not tell wich ones even carry the trait.
