As far as heating goes, they do produce slightly less visible light (not just filtered) and thus, more heat than an average incandescent lamp (Blue and red night time versions only). Even the NOMA heat lamps give off significantly more light. Less light and a "moon light" blue is a bit more pleasing to the human eye, buy arguably seems to make little difference to the animals. Agreed they do seem to have a seemingly short life expectancy. For the economics I do not use them.
Here's my personal evaluation.
ZooMed (moonlight blue):
Visable light: A
Heat and penetration: C+
Longevity: C
Cost: D
Overall: C
Zoomed (infrared):
Visable light: A+
Heat and penetration: A
Longevity: D
Cost: D
Overall: C+
NOMA heat lamp:
Visable light: D
Heat and penetration: B+
Longevity: A+
Cost: A+
Overall: A
