BCI is REALLY growing....

Hey folks...

It's been a while since I posted, but I have a couple questions. I have a 9-month old female BCI that I got when she was only 3 months old. She has always eaten regularly once a week. First on small mice, then on large and jumbo mice and now finally on small rats. She's already pushing 4.5' and has just gone into yet another shed cycle.

Question 1: How big is she going to get? Or rather, isn't she growing extrordinarily fast? All the books I've read say that these guys grow to about 2.5-3.5' in the first year and she's still got three months to go.

Question 2: I currently have her in a Vision 215 (28"x14"x20") and with a couple hides and a water dish there really isn't all that much free space. Is this too small for her? If not, how much longer can I keep her in it? If so, I would like to go ahead and buy a setup she can live in for the rest of her life. Any ideas? If she's going to be a 9 footer or larger what size enclosure should she ultimately have? I kinda prefer to have a little height as well has length and breadth for purely aesthetic reasons, so I'd like to stay away from things like Boaphile Plastic cages. I'd also prefer to be able to light it. Any ideas?

Question 3: She's always been extremely calm, but since I moved down to Texas (from Massachusetts) 6 weeks ago I've noticed that she's significantly more aggitated. She still hasn't bit me (or even drawn back like she might) but she's simply not as calm when I hold her. Any ideas why?

Thanks for listening and I hope to get some good feedback,

Herpocrite.

Sounds like normal healthy growth to me, all my holdbacks from previous years have grown similarily. As to full potential growth a guess would be anywhere between seven and ten feet. This all depends on food size frequency of feedings, and of course genetics. For housing I would recommend that you build a cage or have someone build it for you. This way you can design it as you wish. The temperment change could just be from the stress of the move. Try to just leave her alone for a week or so till she is more comfortable. Hope this helps a bit and good luck with her. Dave
