Unhappy Mouth Rot

so we got a large brown basilisk in at my store sometime in the last couple of days. i just saw it yesterday (i'm part-time) and i think it has mouth rot. it appears swollen and it gives the impression that his mouth is not closed all the way because the lips are swollen outwards and down a bit. it may just be damage from it rubbing on the glass over time, but at least he appears to have stopped that behavious. there may not be any point in my posting about this as by the time i work next someone might have taken care of it, but i wouldn't be surprised if no one does sadly. anyways, from what i described, is it mouth rot and what can i do about it? vet is out of the question as i can't afford it, he's not mine and there's no way the store is going to shell out for that. they'd rather just have me sell him to someone and let them deal with their sick animal.

help anyone?

Thanks
Cheers
Kim

A Tony Robins Speach...lol

hey kim...sorry its really to hard to help on this little bit of info...If you own a digi camera and could put up pics I and many others here would be in a better position to talk to you about this...the real thing I'm writing on this thread about is your idea that because your part time you have little say about how your store is run.

Whether your store is a small mom&pop or mega store....go straight to the person on top and talk with them....They do care about the animals..other wise there are better and easier ways to make money....but the bottom line matters....explain that you have a real interest in not only animals (they know that already) but in the best interest of the Store.

Explain that you have notice that substandard animals are being purchsed by your deptarment...explain how this effects the store in way of lost animals....sick animals sold to customers....who do not become the repeat buyers that most herpers are...explain that this is getting the entire store a bad rep and that you think you can help fix this.

show that you are knowledgeable...and also care about the bottom line...ask to help in decision making about new reptiles purchased.

get them to see your point by showing them it is in their best interest.

Who knows with enough hard work your part-time might become more....you sound young so maybe it could work its way into a full time summer job....

Just please be prepared..fully prepared before you go and see the manager/owner...I believe that this is the best way to you bring about a postive change that it sounds like you very much want.

good luck and......i hope this works as good for you as it did for me....

Cleaning with Bridine (or other iodine based soap) will help both if its mouth rot or from rubbing, just try not too let him swallow it, make sure its diluted, its not expensive, and a vet will tell you the same (I was in not long ago) if its very sever you’d need antibiotics from a vet, but from your description I would try the washing, Good luck ,
