Tank Size

Alright as you know i should be getting a Blood soon, I just wanted to know if the cage I have set up is a good size. The cage is 36 long 18 deep 18 high...Do you think this is a good size cage for a female blood?

HOw old/big is this female blood. What type of cage is it. I use vision cages for my bloods they hold humdity good.

It's a custom glass enclosure. The Blood is just a baby...but will that size due for an adult?

That enclosure will be way too big for a baby blood. They seem to thrive much better in smaller enclosures kept at warmer ambient temperatures - i.e. 82 - 86 consistently. I set all of my youngsters up in small clear polycarb shoeboxes ventilated with holes from a soldering iron & they do extremely well in them. When you put a small snake in a big cage, it's easy for the animal to become extremely overwhelmed by feeling exposed...this causes stress, which eventually leads to an unhappy and/or sick snake.

You may want to consider a smaller enclosure for starting out & allow your blood to eventually grow into it's new home. As was previously mentioned, Vision cages can make excellent enclosures for older blood pythons as well.

That is also too small for an adult blood, male or female. Your looking at something more like 4'x2', height isn't important since these guys are strictly terrestrial so 1' is fine. I would also strongly discourage you from housing your blood in an aquarium. These are very ill-suited to bloods, and any other humidity loving species. It is impossible to maintain any cross-ventilation in a tank, but it is ok if you keep the top complelety open, as enough air can be exchanged for a healthy environment... however you cannot maintain elevated humidity levels by this. You now must block off the top, and by doing this you block off the ventilation. Stagnant air is not beneficial!! It also creates a prime environment for spores to thrive in.

Thaks Linds but it is a custom made glass tank where there is cross ventialation the top is closed off and there are holes in the side and I even put a little computer fan on the size to help with the air flow

Size

This is a very heavy-bodied snake. Large adults may have a massive girth. The head is long and broad, wider than the neck; the tail is short and tapers sharply. Most adult females measure 50"-72" in total length, most adult males measure 40"-60" in total length. It’s not unusual for older females to attain 96" in total length and the maximum size for the taxon reportedly exceeds 10 feet in total length. We’ve seen females measuring between 8’-9’ that were 40-45 pounds in weight.

I would use a rubbermaid right now for the baby. Cheap and holds humidity good. take care Nick
