seperating snakes...

In your oppinion, what is more effective or are these methods both as efffective...

Here is what I mean..

1 - housing the snakes both in totally different enclosures where they can't smell each other (in different rooms or close by)

2 - Put them both in a huge cage where there is a wooden seperator between the two animals .. not allowing them to see each other .. but probably enabling them to smell each other..

Obviously #1 solution is the best but would it be as good with sol. #2?

Does anyone use any of these methods for breeding?

both solutions work well.. we house all of our animal's in rubermaid racks so there is only a divider between them, this has worked for us and many of our friends....hope this helps

Well i don't have too herps so I can't give an opinion based on experience but too me soultion #2 seems more practical and cheap. ok oin the wild they have predators and smelling them but never seeing them will just make them think theres another competor nearby also its large so they have space annd to me it seems cheaper and less work because you just take out the snakes put them in seprate containers and take out the diveder and clean and poof! all done

thats just my opinion.

Perfect .. the reason I asked is that all my cages are huge .. varying form 100 to 250 gallons.. and its much simpler to seperate the cage in half then to use two of those size!

just wondering what do you keep in those cages???? Adacondas? that must take up the whole room lol well it's nice to know people like to give there reptiles lotsa room!

My curent collection consists of the following ..

Two ball Python
two Burmese python
two Snow Bull snakes
One Coastal carpet python
One Jungle carpet
One Rock python
One Blood python

2 savanah monitors
1 spec. caimen

They vary in size ... I really do need cages of that size!
I alwasy wanted anacondas but i doubt I will ever get one .. I don't think i could ive them proper housing therefor I choose not to own one..

I need big cages for most of my guys so thats what they get!

Yeah, they can be pretty hard to regulate (temp and humidity). If you do house 2 snakes together, make sure there are 4 hide boxes and 2 water dishes. Snakes are SOLITARY! Therefore, if they find an awesome place to be where prey comes dancing along every week, they are going to stay put and the last thing they want to see is another stupid snake in its territory! Housing snakes together isn't a good idea in my books. 2 smaller cages is the best option.

i have a big 133 gallon and i house 2 snakes in there..i have a divider in it so that there is no problems....

I have had lots of discussions with many ppl and I have taken the descision to house SOME of my pairs together during the off breeding season .. I have never ever had any problems with it .. I personally think it to be benefical to them .. I know theres a million reason why not to do it .. but I think it can be done if it's done in the right manner... Many are house seperatly but IN MY OPPINION I think it to be to there advantage to be together (for some)..

One large cage offers way more room to both and offers more temp differences .. many more hides and and perches.. Its just my way of optimizing there room .. true its super super expensive to heat but It means a better lifestyle for the snakes.. I beleive that these animals required .. a ***** lot of space .. way more than the minimum requirements .. again just my oppinion..

But i do agree with you and you do make a great point .. nevertheless .. I aint changing my ways...

Thanks .. I am really starting to have a nice collections .. both my savanahs are perfectly tames .. one is named Miss Burnseys, (female) I got her about 9 month ago .. she had gotten a burn about 6 inches long on her back .. 2 inches wide and about 1 cm deep .. She almost died .. after many vet bills x-rays and a lot of baythryll, bath betadine and personal attention, she pulled thrue.. Her back is completly white but she has pulled thrue great and now is just like any other garbage can!

My male is the biggest savanah I have ever seen .. only 3 feet 2 inches but He is honestly round as a football! ITs nuts he is gigantic...

Monitors are my fav of all lizards!

ok i havent had my say yet so hereit goes LOL
i have to agree with dom on this I believe if you have a big enough enclosure you can house snakes together(some) obviously not cannibalistic ! but as i have mentioned on here before i have two enclosures the same size 12'lx6'wx7'h in them I keep : in one I keep a 16'albino female burm and a 14' normal burm male in the other i keep a male and female 12' tiger retic AND a 11' normal female burm these three are only 1.5 years old so arent very heavy yet ALL my snakes i house together coinside with no problems what so ever come feeding time i remove them feeding one at a time, no fuss no muss.Im not saying this may work for everybody but its worked for me for a few years but to each his own.
