Opinons on "snake gloves"

I am just getting started in the venomous snakes. I am trying to research and get everything I need before I get one. Are snake gloves needed? I am not sure they are safe since they are not guarenteed.

Oh! I wanted to add the only venomous species that I could keep are the ones found in GA.

this is my opinion:

why do you need gloves? you shouldnt be handling the snakes anyways.
If and when you NEED to handle them for medical/health purposes, gloves cause you to greatly lose dexterity.....and in my opinion, this is not the best situation to lose dexterity

not everyone will agree with this, but i have done it with and without gloves and I find gloves to be useless

not to mention that pitvipers fangs will go through many gloves (and the stronger the material, the less your dexterity will be).

Thank you. I wouldn't be handling any of them at all with my hands. Was really just wondering if I needed them as a precautionary item.

I keep a pair of the Midwest gloves in my hot room for unforseen circumstances. I cannot think of one off the top of my head when i would need them, but it is nice to know they are there. I have actually used them more trying to gives the cats a bath

That is hilarious BW. I have no cats though so I may not need them.

Hmmm Brian cats are far more dangerous then venomous snakes arnt they lol, as for gloves they are more of a henderance then aid. If you feel safer using them which with some species isnt a bad idea then . My cousin is a law enforcment officer and swears these gloves have saved his butt a few times ;;;;http://www.webspecials.com.au/glovesslash.htm

Might be wourth a check

Never used them. They look cumbersome to me.

I have not used them on a hot yet. Work great on mammals i like having as many types of equipment as possible. There may come a time when I need them for some circumstance I cannot foresee. But snake HAVE bitten through them, and people HAVE been envenomated. The only instance I can even reptely using them on a hot is withthe Coral. Not to pick him up rather than hooking. But this guy acts like there is a Bottle Rocket up his rear everytime the cage door opens and he flies off hooks. But no glove is SnakeProof, only snake resistant. It is added protection, not total protection. Ihope that I hever have to use them on a hot, but if a unique circumstance arrises where it is the best or only appropriate method, i am glad they are there.

And yes, cats are more dangerous. Ask my wife who contracted Cat Scratch Fever last year. And I thought it was just a song Heck, Cat Scratch Fever causes fatallities if untreated.

I never try snake gloves on my hots since most of my snakes can bite thro' them very easy. But I think you may use them on those mild venomous rear-fanged snakes like vine snakes ...etc. I haven't try on my cat yet....

They are most likely effective on smaller fanged species....... Like ETET, I have snakes that can bite through them........ I would not test them with my gaboons....... Plus you can wind up injuring a snake because you cant get a good feel of the pressure you are putting on the snakes neck....... I would not even waste the money......
