Radiant Heat and Perch Distance

What is a good starting point (distance) between the perch and the panel? I am thinking ~5" but wonder if that is too close? Any suggestions?

Thanks

Re: Radiant Heat and Perch Distance

Would it even matter so long as its regulated by a stat?

Re: Radiant Heat and Perch Distance

Whichever distance gives you the basking temp you need for your particular snake.

Re: Radiant Heat and Perch Distance

Some RHP brands recommend 6" as the minimum distance. Personally, if I wanted to create a hotspot in the mid to high 80's(most snakes), I'd keep the distance between 6 and 12 inches. If it's too far the RHP will have to work a bit hard to keep up with the set temperature on the stat. If it's too close, it will barely do much to keep the ambient temperatures up.
