Having Trouble Eating Head-first?

So my little spotted python has recently started doing this thing where when he strikes the mouse, even if he bites it right on the face, he will wrap around its front half, then let go of the mouse and start trying to eat it. It takes him like 20 minutes to even start eating it because he tries to go backwards and finds out it doesn't work. Eventually, he realizes he is holding onto the end he should start from and finally gets it right. It has no effect on his health so it doesn't concern me, I just thought it was funny Anyone else have snakes who aren't quite the most skilled hunters?

Re: Having Trouble Eating Head-first?

a few of my Carpets do that mate

i had a Jag try for roughly 2 hours to eat a rat backwards, with a back leg stuck out each side of it's mouth, after it finally let go and ate it head first,it looked like the snake had ran a marathon, puffing, panting and looking very tired s she ate

for my female Diamond i cut the rats tails off at the stump,as she always eats prey backwards and gets the rats tails jammed at a weird angle,so she can't get the prey swallowed

snakes can be quite stupid at times imo

cheers shaun

Re: Having Trouble Eating Head-first?

My king, bless his heart, is a complete dummy when it comes to eating.

When I gave him his first fuzzy he insisted on eating it butt first. Took him over half an hour, and at one point I checked on him only to find that he had just the mouse's head sticking out of his mouth and it was just WEIRD looking.

He also always eats it the wrong way. I expect similar confusion when I swap him to hoppers in a week or so.

My MBK does the backwards thing all the time. Normal for her.

Re: Having Trouble Eating Head-first?

Garter snakes swallow backwards quite often.

I wouldn't know if my garter did--he won't let me watch!
