New Member New Corn

Hello everyone ! Yesterday i brought home a 7 month old male blood red corn. I handled him on two different occasions at the store in the span of a week. Both times i had him out for 15 to 20 minutes and he was really laid back. He coiled around my neck for quiet a while with his head resting on my shoulder and never seemed jumpy even with several people walking by me. My main question is should i still let him settle for a week in his new home or would it be ok to handle him after a couple of days? Any advice will be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Congrats on your new snake. Always best to give them some time to acclamate. Chances are he'd be fine with the handling but it wouldnt hurt to wait a few days. Also just because he seemed chill with handling in the store doesn't mean he wasn't stressed.

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your new corn. I would let him settle in for a while before handling him. I usually make sure my new snakes have eaten at least twice before I handle them. Best wishes and post pics when you can

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome ! Is it normal for a corn to spend all of it's time in the cool end hide ? The temps on that end are low to mid 70's at day and mid to high 60's at night. The warm end high 70's to mid 80's during the day and high 70's to low 80's at night. This is in a 20 long with a uth and blue heat bulb on a zoomed 500r reostat. I have a vivarium electronics ve-200 on the way. I like proportinal t-stats.

Some snakes like the hot end and some like the cold end, all we can do is provide the options and let them choose.

My snakes never liked the colored bulbs. I know they're supposed to be basically invisible to the snakes, but mine knew when it was on and wouldn't go under it. A UTH on a thermostat is enough for a corn.

Thanks again for the replies ! The floor temps under the uth are fine, but without the heat bulb, the ambient air temps struggle to stay much above the temps in the room which are 72 day and 67 night. I dont have the option of moving them to a different part of the house.

You can raise the temps on your uth until the surface reaches your desired level. I set my thermostat to 92-94 and that brings my surface temps to 86-90. I also use a low watt infrared bulb to assist with ambient temps in the winter and for night viewing.

Might be abit late but I thought I'd throw my 2 cents in lol. I got my first ever snake (A Corn like yours) about 2-3 weeks ago and he spends most of his time in his hide under the cool side and only goes to the hot side by night when it's abit colder. I found this abit strange aswell but I soon realised that's just his preference and will go to the hot side when he wishes to.

No worries, my corn has been staying on cool side most of the time this summer. Hot side is 85 cool side low 70's.
