Photographs - how to copyright digital pictures
How do you copyright a digital photo you took? Do you need to pay for the copyright?
I've noticed people put their copyright sign in the corner of their photos to let people know. How do you do that?

Most people use photoshop to do so.

It's fun designing your own, but make sure to play with the opacity. You dont want your watermark to be too opaque. If you need any help, feel free to pm me.
Like billman said, you can use photoshop to do this. I use cs5.

Use the number pad on your computer, hold down Alt and type the number
ALT + 0169
will give you the copyright © symbol.
Standard notation is:
Copyright © 2013 Photographer Name. All Rights Reserved.
unfortunately this may not be the end of the story, I know you guys have a registration service for copyright, that you have to pay for, and in the UK one has just been set up - but essentially what it comes down to, is your ability to prove that you took the photograph and when you did so, this is not legal advice, however I use private online services to store my images, services which provide a date stamp on the file upload - in the UK copyright is assumed, you simply have to prove that you own the copyright and when the copyright was obtained (ie when you took the photo, or when it was time stamped in a manner which cannot be altered), i dont know if this is the case in the US

Technically a photograph is copyrighted as soon as you take it.But when you post it online people may use it without your consent. It is in such a situation that you may need go for copyright claims and take down notices, but such notices will be honored depending on the country in which the person is located.
The Best way to prevent Photo Theft and let people know the image is copyrighted is by using a visible watermark.You can use any image editor like eg  aint to insert a watermark,but it will take a lot of time.I have been using a software called Mass Watermark.It allows me to add Text/Logo Watermark to multiple Images fast.It is also recommended to resize the large resolution images before you post them online.This software can do that simultaneously.It's not free though cost $30.Well worth the price in my opinion Here is the website masswatermark.com

I made my watermark in Photoshop. I'd be happy to design one for you if you like, you would need Photoshop or Gimp to use it though.
Mine is circular with my name and website included as you can see.

Make sure whatever you do, you put it in a spot where it can't simply be cropped out....Anyone can crop pictures in paint, if you want to make sure nobody else is going to use your pics, do it right. Best way to watermark is to have a very light one, and paste numerous times over the whole picture...

lol I wouldn't want to flood the picture with the copyright. How would putting it near the object of the picture be? like on the body of a snake?

after googling watermarks, the following is what I find most ideal. It doesn't flood the page or distract you, and it can't be cropped out.
The bottom corner one is optional.
