Shipping a snake

Is there anything special I need to do to ship a snake across the US? I know its over night and the snake weighs less than a pound but do I need a permit? Can I pick up the kits (box styrofoam etc) anywhere? Who is best to ship with?

thank you

Re: Shipping a snake

You are not allowed to ship snakes with UPS, they do not accept them.

With FedEx, you must be individually certified OR use ShipYourReptiles.com and you are shipping under our certification. You must meet our SYR Shipping Standards, including packaging requirements and weather parameters.

Slcbum- you don't have to use SYR packaging, but you MUST use an insulated box with at least 3/4" insulation. You can buy the materials and build your own, but it is easier to get one of our SYR Shipping Kits and be all ready to go. Kits include the box, insulation, bag, deli, heat pack, cold pack, everything you need to complete one shipment.

Once packaging is ready, the process is pretty smooth. It may seem daunting to ship your first reptile, but that is why we are here, to provide the info and support you need to ship confidently and safely.

Feel free to contact us directly with any questions, we help first time shippers just about every day! : )

Re: Shipping a snake

Check out the UPS TOS, linked here, it specifically prohibits the shipping of snakes, including non-venomous.

UPS: Shipping Live Animals

When you ship against the TOS of any service, it puts us all in jeopardy, and the future of the hobby and industry in jeopardy. We have enough anti-reptile legislation working against us at it is, we don't need the negative impact, and/or PR, of a confiscated UPS snake shipment.

If UPS finds a snake in the system, even a properly packaged, harmless snake, they turn it over to Fish and Wildlife, and there are heavy fines and fees to get it back, if at all possible. You don't want your reptiles confiscated, that is a no-win situation for everyone.
