Heating gradient

Just want to get a quick assessment of what everyone's heating gradients are. I've used both vertical and horizontal and haven't seen too much of a difference in the snakes' reactions. but i've heard that it can cause problems for the snake if the heat goes way up and the snake doesn't move down, i'm not too sure that my snakes have ever not moved down if the top of their cage is too hot though.
