Serious bites by Venomoid animals.
by JRHarrison on October 14, 2004
In the last couple years with the growth of venomous keeping, some people have begun to alter their animals. I am not going to pass judgement or want to start arguements. I would just like to pass on some information on 2 bites by venomoids. Because of my involvement with these two cases I can only give a small amount of info.
One was a Crotalus adamanteus that bit the owner while he was freehandling it for a group of kids. His infection needed treatment with Cipro.
Second was a Bitis gabonica rhinoceros the bite was to the leg as the owner cleaned its cage. He placed it on the floor and then accidentally stepped back on it.
His infection was limb and life threatening . The victim was on IV antibotics for a month.
Venomoid animals though not venomous can carry all types of nasty bacteria in their mouths or on their fangs.
Use handling tools and treat them the same as a venomous specimen.
