Here in Calgary its on at like 12:30 noon . Forget what channel though,I have watched a few but they are always on how to care for things like mice, gerbils, rabbits as pets.

yea they talked about hwo when your pregnant u shouldnt handle reptiles. and how to get a dog use to a new baby.

Hehehe. Yeah, I caught that this morning. I also caught you the other day on a rerun talking about how tegus might not be the best beginner reptile. I love the pet guys, if only for their naive approach and blatant commercialism.

Why shouldn't pregnant women handle reptiles? Please don't tell me you're feeding the media those lies about salmonella, if so you're doing reptiles a great disservice.

Well Katt If a Pregnant woman is holding a reptile that does happen to have a good strong case of Salmonella she could catch it. And i am sorry But I will not want to have any problems or complications with my wife because of it. This is a big open debate now I would rather be safe then sorry and have that message out there then "Ya everything is fine don't worry" Then the person watching the show says ok i'm fine and looses the unborn child i get sued and so on.

Your wife has more chances of catching salmonella from cooking your dinner, than from a reptile, short of cooking an omelette with its feces. Cats, various birds, dogs even cause more cases of salmonella, than snakes. Cut pieces of cantelope are just LOADED with salmonella. http://www.doh.wa.gov/Publicat/2002_News/02-77.htm

Reptiles are targetted enough. To say a pregnant woman can't handle a snake, is to say, neither can she own a cat or dog. As long as she properly washes her hands before touching any mucus membranes and doesn't clean out kitty's litter box, there's very low risk to the baby. Tell your wife not to ride the bus or touch door knobs.
I am NOT saying it's fine ok and dandy to lick kiss or heck eat snake poop, but with proper handling and hand washing there's not much to worry about.
It would be far better for you to emphasize that pregnant women should wash their hands thoroughly after handling reptiles than to completely ban their handling. For someone who is in it for the education, I'm really quite surprised by this anti-reptile sentiment.

I don't see how there is even a debate about this. Reptiles have salmonella, fact, handling reptiles always passes on salmonella, NOT TRUE. Wash your hands immediately, how hard is that?

Exactly. It isn't inhaled through the air or absorbed through your skin... if you have cuts, make sure they are covered, and wash your hands before you touch anything that could possibly end up in your mouth
