Recently came into possession of a Boa

Hi all, new to the forums.
I've recently come into possession of a Motley Boa around 2 years old, not too big.
I have him in a 36 by 18 tank (was an older tank from my BP)
Anyway, my question is two part.
Is the tank big enough? And I currently only have a heat lamp. Will he be okay for a bit till I buy a UTH?

Welcome aboard IT. I'm not sure how big your boas is but a 36x18 tank should be ok for an average 2 y/o. Does your heat lamp have a thermostat or dimmer and what are your temps like?

It does not, seems pretty normal stock little lamp, power isn't too strong. The temps are about 85 to 90 on the hot side.
Living in CA and the weather has been pretty hot lately (not sure if that helps)

He's about 3 feet, the lamp in itself doesn't really have anything special just a low power lamp. The temps seem to be around 85 to 90 On the hot side. I'm living in CA and it's been hot out lately (if that gives any idea of outside temps that could effect it)

Re: Recently came into possession of a Boa

Hello and welcome. A rule of thumb that i try to go by ( depending on species) is if the snake can stretch out with two sides of the enclosure its a good size. If the enclosure is a screen top enclosure then yes i would suggest an under tank heater and cover the top. If you use a heat lamp with an exposed top the humidity would get sucked right out. I have used both heat pads and heat lamps and both work fine depending on the enclosure itself.
