After Shed - Red Tail

So, I just got home from the pet store and noticed that my Red Tail seems to be in almost a hibernation like sleep. Is this normal? I have decided that I am going to sell the Red Tail and just keep the Ball Python for now, and I don't know what I need to do. Thanks for any advice

Why are you selling it?

Re: After Shed - Red Tail

What do you mean by 'Hibernation like sleep'? Is the snake unresponsive or something similar?

A little confused why you appear to be going through all the effort of separating these two snakes only to decide to sell the red tail without giving it much of a chance.

I think you are making a wise choice. One snake is enough for you right now.

Slow down. Seperate them and keep them a bit before selling anyone.
You cant be quick to judge a snake.

Re: After Shed - Red Tail

To answer both questions: She has buried herself in the substrate and when I un-buried her she was responsive to touch, and movement, but I didn't want to pick her up and run a risk of her striking, seeing how she just shed . The reason I am going to sell it, I do not have the availability to care for 2 snakes at this time.

Then why did you get them in the first place?

Re: After Shed - Red Tail

She was just sleeping.. Shedding is very tiresome to snakes. I am glad you are smart enough to admit that 1 snake is enough for you. I hope you can find Dexter a good home.

It's perfectly normal for a snake to give you the impression that it's been in the same spot for a week or two.

However separate the Ball Python and Boa immediately. They each need separate enclosures which satisfy the husbandry needs of their particular species...

Re: After Shed - Red Tail

Regardless of whether you are selling the red tail or not - you need to separate the two snakes, either for permanent residence or during the interim between your care of her and the care of her next owner.

Not trying to harp on you i swear, but before buying an animal you should try to prepare your set up and research them before hand. It makes the transition easier for both you and your pet. I'm guessing that you thought you would be able to care for those two snakes since they were already in the same enclosure and appeared to 'get along' great. It's good that you admit you're only able to care for one in this circumstance.

However I'll say this again, during the interim between your care and her next owner's, you MUST separate them, for their own safety. I know other folks have mentioned this to you in your other thread, I've read it a few times over.

You've only had these two for a day or two now - and it appears that you've been handling them a fair amount by your posts...Perhaps the reason you found your red tail buried is she was seeking a safe place to sleep where she wouldn't feel disturbed (a.k.a, your handling her so much.). I'm no expert, and trust the word of those who are over me.

Re: After Shed - Red Tail

They are separated. We got Dexter (the Red Tail) into a separate tank. It is a little small for her, but it will do for now. I really do not want to sell her or give here to a friend, but I refuse to have a pet that I can not take care of properly. As it is, I feel bad enough that I could not buy (they here out of them) a heating pad and the snake has to stay in the garage for now.

Thanks for all the input, and we figured out why she was like that. Getting her out, we realized she was cold, so she was not on the heating pad as we thought she was.

I will find her a good home, not just anyone can get her from me!

You really should give it away immediately to someone who could properly take care of it.

It's cruel and selfish to keep a snake like that without a heat source so you can take your time to find someone who will actually buy it for money. That snake will die without heat...

Re: After Shed - Red Tail

I am in Texas and trust me, the garage has plenty of heat in it Moreli, but thank you for the concern. I am trying to get rid of it, but only to the right person. I have several people lined up to come check her out over the next few days. Im about to feed her now.

I am about 30 minutes north of Houston rmfsnakes32
