Brb caging

Hey im planning on getting a brb in a few months. I have a 40 gallon zilla cage. Is this going to be sufficient for him or her?

oh yeah i would say so that would be a great size for it, if its a juvie then i would say house it in something a little smaller for the time being cause i don't know about anyone else but i think a small snake can be stressed in a big tank but it would be a wonderful cage size for you brb

A baby or juvi should be in a tub , I have my 2 footer in a 105 qrt tub as it holds humidity at 85% perfectly for days . Adult do better in a 4x2x2 from soemwhere like animal plastics or boamaster or boaphile. Tanks or not so good unless you can get a all glass top to hold the humidity in. tubs are great as they are light , easy to clean which you must do often as high humidity will cause growth of molds and other nasty life. BRB are nocturnal , you will not see it much as they hide almost all the time. This is all IMHO , but others will chine in also.

i agree with tubs for babies and juvies... you COULD use your 40 gallong, but you will need alot of hides, deep(er) substrate so it can burrow, you will need to maintain the whole cage around an ambeint of around 76 or so, warm spot of 80 and cool side of 72. witht he screen top it will be hell to keep humidity, so add a small tupperwear tub fill it with damp papertowl and you have a humid hide -or- get plexiglass cut to fit the top lips of the cage, and drill a few holes for some ventalation, and this will also help with humidity...

i have my baby in a 36x12x18 cage with a big water dish, lots of substrate, and humid hide and she is doing great!! just make sure whatever you use, to mainain temps and humididty, both are VERY important of BRB..

I'll stick my neck out here by admitting that I'm not a big fan of tubs as extended living quarters. Tubs carry a connotation of "temporary" and "disposable," neither of which squares with the concept of a pet as a valued family member. I feel full vivariums are the best way to keep Brazilians, and that a full viv, even a small one, provides a much more stable "home" feeling than a tub ever could.

That said, I think they are wonderful as temporary measures, and uI se them to house my own babies until they are sold.

As for the original question, the Zilla units are 40 "Wides "rather tha 40 "Talls," right? If so, they measure 36+L x 18+W-, which yields 4.5 square feet of floor space. This will keep your rainbow happy until he passes the juvenile stage. Just remember to replace the mesh top with plexiglass one.

I'm gonna disagree there Cliff. All of my snakes are in tubs of varying sizes and many local friends have lifers in tubs and they all seem to do great in there. That said if I had the space to set everyone up in something nice like boaphiles I would (I've got 2 right now in the garage due to lack of space) but in an apartment with roommates who don't much care for snakes its not much of an option.

Well, the obvious approach is to tub your roommates and use their rooms for those vivs. ;-)

i tried a tub for mine, just couldt get it to work.... switched her to a 36x18x12 melamine cage... works great now!!!

but for a baby, a tub could be used, for adults i agree to use like, a boaphle or something.

I'd say tubs are the way to go for almost ALL juvie snakes, with some minor exceptions. They are just so easy to clean and husbandry becomes much easier, plus when a neo outgrows a 6qt you can move it up as fast or as slow as you like without breaking the bank. In fact, I am picking up a 74 qt rack tomorrow that will be used for my BRBs once they hit adulthood, but will first house some of my male carpets and juvie burms. At ~6.5 ft of floor space, 74 qt tubs are perfect for adult BRBs.

With that said though, over the coming years I will slowly be acquiring more PVC/melamine cages as space permits, and I hope to be able to provide my carpets and BRBs with semi-arboreal setups. I do not believe it is essential for their health, but they do seem to enjoy having perches available. At the moment I have too many snakes and not enough space (or money!) to provide them with that kind of setup.
