Substrate help

For you guys with large snakes and custom built cages or Visions etc do you still use substrate and of so what kind? I have him on a self adhesive linoleum but feel substrate may help with spot cleaning smell etc

Thanks

Re: Substrate help

Newspaper. Cheap and works great! You could also use towels. When he/she defecates, you could clean 'em off and pop 'em in the washing machine

Re: Substrate help

I use newspaper with a layer of aspen bedding on top. When they poo, I am able to roll it all up and toss in trash. I have used just newspaper, but aesthetically, I like the aspen look. The snake really prob could care less.

I second this, I use pretty much the same thing, Zoo Med Aspen Snake Bedding, except with paper towel underneath instead of newspaper, but newspaper is FREE which rocks so go with that if you want! Some snakes burrow and love to burrow into the aspen substrate.

Re: Substrate help

Thanks everyone. I have him just on a linoleum tile but I figured I should add something else. I will either go with a towel or cypress mulch

Re: Substrate help

I have used a few things and love a cypress/cocoa husk mix. Worked great but a few weeks ago I found aspen for $13 for a hay bale sized bag. The large zoomed bag is $16 and this is about 10 or more of those in one big bag. I changed out everyone I have and used less than 1/3 of the bag. Thats 10 snakes 4 of which are 5.5 to 7.5 ft in appropriate sized vivs. Hell thats almost as cheap as newspaper. But now I mist my boas daily instead of weekly.
Anyway the snake probably doesn't care unless it likes to bury itself in substrate. Then newspaper is a big fail
