Need help with a constipated boa
I have a new baby Columbian RTB who has been eating just fine for the last 4 weeks. Every 5-7 days she eats a fuzzy without issue. She hasn't been defecating recently (about 2 weeks ago was the last I noticed) and now her anus is swollen, slightly pink and it appears that there is fecal matter right at the brink of coming out. I noticed it slightly a few days ago but today is much worse.
It's the weekend and everything is closed in my area except for one 24 hour vet. But as my luck will have it, they're closed for training.
I have never dealt with a constipated snake before but I'm assuming that soaking her in warm water could help. Anyone else have any ideas?

Re: Need help with a constipated boa
Yes. A luke warm bath may help. Other than that I am not sure.

Re: Need help with a constipated boa
Since I saw those replies I've been scrambling to find an open vet. It's a bit of a drive but I'm gonna take care of it now. Thanks for your help. I'll post again after the vet visit

Good luck. Prolapse isn't a light thing.

Re: Need help with a constipated boa
Vet said it wasn't too bad and it was caught early enough. I was given a de-worming med and was told to soak her once a day for a week. The vet also prescribed an anti-inflammatory for the swelling. She said it shouldn't be life threatening but if it continues to prolapse that surgery may be the only other option. All in all, I'm relieved. Thanks for your quick replies. I was able to get packed up and on the road within 30 min of my original post thanks to you guys. You're awesome

Re: Need help with a constipated boa
Glad to see someone taking the advice of a vet visit and doing what is necessary for the sake of the animal - Kudos to you!!!

Re: Need help with a constipated boa
Update: I took Eve, that's her name, to her regular vet this morning. He specializes in reptiles so I wanted his take on things, especially since there hasn't been too much improvement with the medication.
He attempted to push the tissue back inside but it kept returning. He stated that sometimes he sees mild cases where their muscles around their rectum just aren't as strong or function as they should and a little bit of tissue protrudes out. He further stated that this case was not life threatening or of too much concern. The amount that was sticking out would not become necrotic and die as is seen in some of the more severe cases. Instead, it would likely harden and become slightly calloused but not impede function.
He did opt to suture the area just in case which I'm supposed to leave in place for 5 days while she finishes off her meds. The hope is that it will just stay in from here on out but if not, it should be ok. If it gets worse then surgery would be the next step.
For now, I have her on paper towel bedding and I removed all the "fluff" from her viv to prevent it from snagging on the area and to help me manage its cleanliness a little better.
Thanks again for your support guys!
