My BP's squeak
I have had this question for a week or 2 now but dismissed it because I thought I was maybe hearing things. I was in Dave's viv trying to pick him up and I thought I had heard a faint squealing noise . I had heard it 3 or 4 times and so I called my wife over . She heard it too . The noise was like a very faint squeak not unlike that of a baby alligator . Then just a few minutes ago Tequila our newest one is sitting on my wifes shoulder and she squeaked too . There is no sign of any distress , no mucus , no signs of illness or anything. So my question is , has anyone else ever encountered this before ?

Re: My BP's squeak
Sounds like the start of a possible RI. The fact that your other snake is now making the squeak makes me think this is what it could be. I have had this happen once, turned out to be a piece of stuck shed by the nostril. I would suggest upping the heat and possibly making a vet appointment. Not something you want to risk.

Re: My BP's squeak
What are the temps, substrate, humidity, last time they shed?

Re: My BP's squeak
Tequila just had a shed a little over a week ago so I do not know as we just got her last night , and Dave just started his shed about 4 days ago . Temps are steady 80 degrees one end and 90 the other , and 70 at night as we were given. humidity I am not exactly sure but over and above the large water bowls in their vivs , I mist them and the insides of their vivs at least 3 times a day . I also mist them as well.

Re: My BP's squeak
It does not sound like an RI , it is not a weezing noise , it almost sounds like a baby crocidile or alligator squeaking for its mother type , and it is not often .It is kinda rare that they do it .

Re: My BP's squeak
I would keep an eye on it, see if it happens more often. I would definitely get a hydrometer to measure the humidity though.

Re: My BP's squeak
They are both very active, no mucus and not in the same tanks - there has been no contact between them at all.

Re: My BP's squeak
Yeh I will . I have only heard Dave do it once and that was almost 2 weeks ago now maybe. He has not done it again and he is quite healthy and happy . Another forum my wife looked into suggests it may be a sound from their scales as well. I will be looking into a hydrameter as well. I am actually going to build them a larger enclosure including thermostats etc .

Re: My BP's squeak
no I do not know if Pythons are canniblistic or not and if they are Tequila would eat Dave in a heartbeat , he is 1/3 her size . The plan is to make a larger eclosure ,about 8 feet in length and divide it in half and have 2 seperate enclosures in one .

Re: My BP's squeak
At least I know now I am doing something right lol . No I do not want them together anyways. Dave is only 16 inches and Tequila is 36 inches . So it probably would not be good no matter what . I am still not 100 % certain Tequila is female and I am 95% sure Dave is male . If they are male and female , we may try breeding later on , but the truth is breeding is not important to us , just enjoying our snakes is all we care about .

could it possibly be a piece of stuck shed up a nostril, its a bit of a coincedence them both having it though, but still possible ?
i have carpets that whistle or rasp from the nostrils during the peroid before and during the shedding proccess
a respiritory sounds very similar though
i also have had young nervous carpets that hiss at you,but it sounds more like someone blowing fast but gently, through their lips, lightly without whistling.you new it was down to nervousness because their lung was going out and in very fast
its puzzling as baby alligators make quite a unique noise, when shouting on mum.i've never heard a snake do it,far less 2 snakes.
let us know if you find out what it is please mate
cheers shaun

Re: My BP's squeak
Yeh , it very well could have been a form of a hiss , that is what I thought at first . It is not something that happens regularly , in fact it is quite rare . I have never heard Dave do it again except that one time and Tequila just did it tonight and it was just once . At this point I am not concerned about it, but it really threw me for a spin when we heard it from both of them . I am very comfortable with thinking it is not the start of an RI ,but this has been very helpful for the future so I do know what to watch for for sure . So glad I found this forum, so many experienced owners who all really seem to care about not only their own snakes but everyone else's too .

Re: My BP's squeak
Hey Dave if you're worried about the possibility of an RI at all then don't drop the temps at night. I'd keep them consistent 24/7.
Sometimes animals just make weird sounds... good luck!
