JCP Setup

I was only able to squeeze in 5 hours of sleep in the last 2 days combined, so needless to say, I'm not being very productive with my research today

I decided to post a picture of my JCP setup; 2' x 2' x 1' Pro-line cage from Ed Lilley @ Constrictors NW (he's about 2.5 hours from me).

My JCP is also going into shed, even though it has only been 22 days since her last shed! As such, I decided to snap a couple of pre-shed pics...post-shed pics in due time (7-9 days). I am impressed by her rapid growth rate and can't wait to see her change of color (she has dulled up significantly in the last 2 days).

Young carpets can shed several times a month, depending on how much you're feeding them and how rapidly they are growing. My yearling shed almost every 25 days for the first year I had him, now it's about every 40. I have a 6-month-old DJCP intergrade that only sheds every 50-60 days though. Also, sometimes a snake will shed twice very close together (we call it double-shedding), which usually happens if the first shed was not complete or the animal is going through a particularly rapid growth spurt. I've seen this in adults though as well.

Thanks! It enables me to control RH quite accurately. She is in shed now, so the fan only operates for a couple hours a day to provide a slight drying cycle. When she's not in shed, I let the RH rise 5-10% during the day, when compared to night, to simulate cyclical humidity that one would experience outside. (It's nearly constant during shed, with the exception of a couple hours.)

It allows for amazingly precise control and operates at about 50% of its normal power; this means the "breeze" is almost tactilely undetectable, yet it still provides improved ventilation. It didn't cost me a penny either!

I simply found an old fan, and wired it to an AC/DC transformer (similar to your cell phone charger; 12V 300mA)....add a timer and presto, simple yet effective humidity control!

Is the fan blowing fresh air in, or circulating out the stale air? I like your setup, and nice looking carpet! I got tagged about 6 times today by mine. He's a little cracker!

It's bringing in fresh air....the flow rate is very low, as to not cause a significant draft. (However, circulating fresh air out would do the same thing...the problem is that the flow would be unrestricted and would create a bigger "breeze" if I turned it around.) Also, I am blowing the air right under the radiant heat panel, as to help warm it up a couple degrees.

He does sound like a feisty little one! Mine gets extra cranky about 3-4 days before going blue. The last time she shed, she exhibited marked changes in tolerating me (for the better!). I'm hoping she does the same this time.

They grow amazingly fast. Keep in mind, she'll be full grown within 2 years. When she's 6-8ft a 2x2x1 might not be big enough.

The 2x2x1 is just a juvenile setup. Her sub-adult/adult cage is 4x2x2, but I didn't want to throw her in there at her current size. Thanks though!

i have found it to be 3 or 4 years before most carpets are full grown

i personally would never breed a female under the age of 4 years

males can be sexually mature a lot sooner and dont have the hassle of carrying eggs.so id breed them from 2 years onwards if they're fertile

i have put hatchling carpets straight into 4x2x2ft tanks as soon as i have them eating regular

as long as there is plenty hides,branches and fake plants to hide in

ive found they seem to appreciate the extra space unlike some species of snake

the above would not apply to a bad feeder or nervous hatchling.

I don't plan on breeding her until at least 5-6 years of age.

She is a nervous little girl, so I thought it would be more appropriate to house her in the 2x2x1 until she is fully acclimated to her surroundings and is comfortable.

My BRB was less shy, so she was housed in a sub-adult cage from the start.

Seems very common with JCP"S, Adalia my first and only JCP. She bit the shite out of me and than just calmed right down...she dont even get nervous when I go in the viv anymore!!!I love carpets though....will definetely have another soon lol
