First Recycled Display Viv Finished

I posted the pics in another thread, but I thought I should open a new thread in the appropriate area. Here is my first of 2 planned display vivs all finished. The case is an old console stereo. It came to me with the components missing. I used it as an entertainment center for awhile, then I looked at it and thought....."Corn snake." Sooooo I hauled it out to the garage, and cut a back and new bottom for it. Painted the whole inside wit 2 coats of Killz primer, and 3 coats of rustoleum black paint.Installed the glass front and a light and..... voila.

Re: First Recycled Display Viv Finished

it looks way better as a snake tank than some sterio unit mate.

i walk about my house thinking if i turned our wardrobes on their side id get a retic in them

if i pulled all the drawers out that chest of drawers and fitted glass turned it on its side id get an adult carpet in it

its a good job my wife puts her foot down or all our furniture would be turned into snake accomodation

you did good mate,it looks great

cheers shaun

Re: First Recycled Display Viv Finished

Thanks guys, your comments are much appreciated! I hate painting, but it turned out all right I think. My next project is and old pine cupboard that was turned into a ferret cage. I ll be going through the same routine with that one. Also, we have a bookshelf, 4' long with 3 shelves 14" deep. I keep looking at that thinking "Dividers, glass doors...HOGNOSE HEAVEN!"

Sounds sweet! What kind of wood is the bookshelf made of?

That is awesome. They look great I was thinking of converting a old console tv. My husband also built me a tv stand that is 24 deep 25 tall and 40 wide all it needs is a piece of glass and some heat. Oh and a new friend

The book shelf is oak, and my wife solidly supports it. "In time"

Thanks Percy! And thanks for your help on the heating. And thanks to feebo as well! The 100 watt ceramic is on it's way! As to convincing the boss, Just don't tell her who wears the PANTS in the household.

Re: First Recycled Display Viv Finished

watch when using pine wood mate i know it can irratate carpet pythons lungs to cause ri's

its the pine oil and sap thats dangerous to them

theres some other woods out there that are bad for snakes but someone else would have to list them as i have no need to be up on it.i only use purpose built shop vivariums.

all the best with your building projects mate

cheers shaun

Re: First Recycled Display Viv Finished

No worries there Shauny. The particular piece I intend to use that is made from pine is almost 100 years old and well dried out. (It was junk when I got it. Used it for a ferret cage for awhile) It will be washed out, primed, primed again, painted, painted again. and caulked caulked ,caulked to high heaven. (Can I get an amen?)
