Freebody, I hope something comes along soon.

You should have told them what the guy who taught me to weld told me:

"You don't have to be a good welder if you can grind!" I can't weld for a damn, i just stick metal together but I know it can be an art. Good luck!

Re: sad day :( think i got bad references on resume :(

my welds were way better than all the other weld test peoples, even the guys working thier came over and looked and said oh yeah they will hire you for sure. now im in a jam because my welding bacground is 10 years full time at 1 place and the @#$%% must have given me a bad reference, after saying he would give me a good reference for sure when i took the volunteer layoff at xmas, so i could use ei to go to school which not knowing this year the govt made cutbacks and no longer fund welding lol being how hes to scared to say bad thing to my face i might go in to my old work and make him write a good reference on paper and call it a day.

Re: sad day :( think i got bad references on resume :(

I had the same problem when i finished my apprenticeship as i was forced out early and went to the union to get my payouts and entitlemets. I ended up threatening to go to court as well. This then left me zero working references and took me a while to get on my feet again. If you could get a written reference that would be great, but your potential new employers will still wish to contact them for proof of the written reference.

Re: sad day :( think i got bad references on resume :(

I almost not sure if i should call the place that would not hire me and just ask them to tell me which of the 3 names on my reference list was bad so i can at least have a fighting chance at getting a job some place else,2 were from the 10 year place 1 from that concrete job i got hurt at, im thinking maybe the concrete place just said i got hurt and that was the deal breaker .... at this rate ill be out joining the ladies on the street corner lol JK, I dont have any previous work experience or references for them to consult LOL at least i still got my sence of humar.

Not sure on hte laws over there but in the UK oyu have the right to see the references that have been given (or a transcript of the conversation if given verbally). May be worth seeing if they will let you?

Sorry to hear that Try not to dwell on it though dude, push on and keep your chin up. It sounds to me like you might be thinking a previous employer has scuppered you but bear this in mind. Beurocracy has got a similar smell to it. It`s perfectly possible that your weld was given the ok and then someone in thier work chain had just decided otherwise. If that company isn`t inclined to give half an inch of leeway they`re probably horrible to work for anyway. Not everybody can weld, it`s a good skill to have in that respect isn`t it. Push on and don`t look back. I`m willing you to succeed, I`m sure we all are. Keep us posted too, I really hope this gets sorted out in time....

I have found that however dishonest it may seem, Load a resume up using just just your best friends as references.

A disposable cell phone makes a great former employer "Number to call"

Face it, Usually if we get fired or we quit under not so great circumstances (Stuff this jobe!!!!) then your best reference may not be a good reference after all.

I'm not saying you should falsify credentials, I'm saying stick to your trade, do what you do, just make sure that the contact people who get called say what you need them to say.

Re: sad day :( think i got bad references on resume :(

thx guys/girls for the moral support im taking this voluntary career course and if i play my cards right i can get 4k from the govt. to take a heavy duty mechanics course and they pay my bill as im in school, but their is alot of hoops to jump through but im getting help their so, yes i got my chin way up but still hate being on such shaky ground sort a speek, i think i will just put a diff # on becuase it was really night and day to how the process went, after the interview thier like, oH yes we need welder right away that will do overtime,do you? im like oh yes+ saturdays if you want, they said when do you think you can start,i said ill get my welding gear out of my car and start right now, all smiles their like great ill call you references and let you know as soon as possible so happy, after they called my reference they were very short and then they almost hung the phone up on my when i asked to retake the weld test because i could do way better than i did if given another chance. It was a union shop for a major world wide coorporation to be honest, i really wanted the job so i have a steady income and something to do with my time but i really dont want to be a welder anymore, so it was an odd feeling when she said no. its just where my skill sets are. ill keep you all posted as success rolls in

Freebody, so sorry to hear that...it sucks. I had a teacher write me a very negative letter of recommendation that cost me acceptance to a Ph.D. program my first round of applications. Her favorite student hated my guts and it seems she shared her view. It was devastating when I found an extra copy of the letter 6 months later.
Things do work out in the end though- I'm at a school I love so much more now, and am actually happy I didn't get in the first time around. You'll find a much better job, and you might look back and be happy in the end too.

Re: sad day :( think i got bad references on resume :(

Get yourself a written reference letter on company paper. Get two if you can... that way you can simply hand the interviewer a copy of the letters and claim that you aren't sure, but those people may not be at the company, but here are their letters. Normally, that's good enough and then make DAMN sure the last reference is a good one...
Good luck!!
