handling

hi guys

just wanted to ask your opinion on handling, i have been told that regular handling of a snake when it is young helps to keep the snake more docile and calm, as it gets use to human touch and sents, my question is how often can you get a snake out ? can i get it out everyday so that it gets use to constant human contact making it much more calm and relaxed ? is what i have been told even true? and what in you guys opinion is the best method of approaching and getting a snake out of its enclosure. i have asked a few other people but get different answers from each so i thought i would shoot you guys a couple of questions as you have been there done that so to speak.

cheers

jay

Re: handling

Hi and welcome! There are basic principles and a bit of common sense to follow but to better address your particular situation it would be good to know what exactly it is your trying to handle.

Re: handling

Yeah. Yu can take your snake out once a day. But some say snakes get stressed if you take your snake out more then once. Welcome

Re: handling

its all carpets i keep and they are notorious for being snappy as hatchlings.i always give my snakes 3 days to digest their food then handle them the other 4 days of the week.its not a good idea to handle them on a full stomach.you run the risk of them regurgatating their meal.its usually because thay are nervous that they bite out at you to defend themselves.i tend to handle them for no more than 5 minutes at a time.then as they start to calm down a few weeks down the line i up the time to 10 minutes.by the time your taking them out for 15 minutes at a time they are usually quite tame as they have finally realised that your not going to eat them.dont get me wrong there are exceptions to the rule that are just down right nasty and they will bite all their lives right through to adult hood.i have a jungle that was raised the same as the rest of my carpets yet he's completely nuts.any chance he gets he will bite you as many times as he can.i also have seen snakes remain nervous no matter what you try hence they remain bitey and on the defence all their lives.i hope this has been of some help to you.i'm quite fond of inland carpets but they are quite expensive to buy in the uk.the are also quite rare over here.i forgot to say i found the best way to get them out the vivarium is just go right up open the door and take them right out.if you spend time hovering about outside the viv building up courage before you do it they just get all stressed out and defencsive waiting on you grabbing hold of them
cheers shaun

Re: handling

thanks guys i appreciate the info, shaun i really like the colour ( or lack of i should say ) black, grey and so on of the inland , the guy that i am getting him from says that he has a bit of trouble getting them sold, i guess most want the bright colours and that, myself personally i really like the neutral colours but in saying that i am after a dimond as well so will be mixing the colours up a bit, thanks again
