Rio Fuerte Beaded Lizards

I didn't think my pair had bred this year but I was wrong. I came home to 10 eggs a few days ago!

These little guys should hatch anytime between Jan - March.

Right on! What medium are they on? You should post a picture of mom and dad
Are they related to gilas? I think that they are super cool lizards. How long have you had yours?

Re: Rio Fuerte Beaded Lizards

I have them on vermiculite. They are cousin's so to speak of gila's. They get about a foot or more longer and have a full tail instead of a stub tail. The other neat thing about them is their tail is semi prehensile! I need to get some new pics, the flash washes out the beautiful yellow color.

Thanks,

John

That's pretty cool! I didn't know they had semi prehensile tails, neat. How potent is their venom and how do you handle them, if at all?

Re: Rio Fuerte Beaded Lizards

Their venom is not designed to kill prey like that of venomous snakes. It's a deffensive venom because they are not quick and would have a rather hard time getting away from preditor's. Their venom is designed to open all the pain receptor's in your body. It's extremely painful, if bitten you'd be at the hospital on a morphine drip. I handle them frequently, they are calm animals once you get them out of the cage. 98% bluff and they constantly hiss. I let them do as they please and they don't snap, if they ever do I'll know it. They have a vice like grip and sharp pointy teeth. They don't have fangs, they have groves in their bottom teeth and chew to administer the venom. I love em! Babies are snappy, I'll have to watch out for them!

Re: Rio Fuerte Beaded Lizards

Thank you for answering my questions. I'm definaltey excited to see hatchlings - I don't doubt they are snappy! If you don't mind, I would also love to see a photo of their enclosure, I find them very interesting and I don't know anybody else who has them!

Re: Rio Fuerte Beaded Lizards

These are the only two photo's I have of them. I purchased the pair from Steve Angeli out in Cali, he's the man when it comes to beadeds and he's been more then helpful with all my questions about incubation! As far as the enclosure it's pretty basic! I have them in a 422 vision on cypress mulch, a large water bowl, and a big log they like to hide in/under. I'll probably upgrade their water bowl so they can fit their entire body in. They are a little small compared to the average beadeds at approx 27" on the female and 29" on the male.
