found mites

I had a problem with my new baby burmese not eating and after looking at him really close today I noticed some mites around his eyes and under his mouth. I disinfected everything in his tank and purchased some reptile relief and used it on him. Hopefully he'll come around to his normal self. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know, thanks.

Baby Burms are prett prone ot mites.

It's not a big deal, as long as you get rid of them sooner than later.

a good way to prevent mites is ti keep them on news paper, and also to them in water with a little bit of dish soap added, it brakes down the density of the water helping drown the mies.

one thing i have tried that is very effective and is simply wiping your snakes body with some vegetable oil with a small sponge,avoiding the eyes and nostrils ,and keeping it on paper towels .The oil is totally non toxic ,odorless,and cheap.

Provent a mite, its the best ever for getting rid of mites and ticks. a can is about $35 but its well worth it. Quick and easy and effective

Yeah, ive been wanting to buy some of that provent-a-mite. I will try that stuff. I am currenty using reptile relief spray, but I notice it kills them, but they still return. I am also keeping my snake on newspaper so cleaning is more convenient compared to the sani chips I was using. I would prefer to use sani chips, but the mites make it tough.

Welcome to the great world of mites once you get them you will never be rid of them 100% they are a plague I have seen people tare their whole Herp room to shreeds literaly to shreads. New cages new flooring animals all being treated seperatly in another location treated the whole renovated herp room. 6 monts later mites show up with no new arrivals.

I hade them once the only way I got rid of them 99.99% was I moved lol litaraly I moved locations My animals get quarentined at anoter location where there is no herps My herp room is a shower in facilitie If I don't know you, you get a free shower curtusy of ME.

A few that I use when I need to are these:
Paper cages, no decals at all.
Fresh water (sounds crazy but it will be your first tell tail sign)
NIX make firiends with it. Be (ready to touch it in ways you never new..hehe)

Now here are the reasons:

Paper cages:
The less you have in your cage the less you have to clean, and I promise you, you will know the deffinition of cleaning when the day is threw.

Fresh Water:
Fresh water is the Key because if you replace the water daily you get too see it befor you dump it. If your animal is soaking because of mites you will see them in the water chances your burm is soking drinking and deficating all in the same dish and at the same time just cause that is what your luck will be I might as well introduce you to my friend Murphy according to old Murphy here if it can go wrong it will, that is if it has not yet went wrong.

NIX:
Nix is a shampoo for lice and thankfuly it kills mites I am not gona quote dosages I will have to look it up again but the stuff does work

Now to protect yourself destroy any Idea that the pet store will help you threw this, bomb it now. Because I am 98% sure that if you use the stuff they give you not only will you be fighting a loosing battle now you have people waiting for your snake to die so they can sell you a replacment. Run as far as posible from pet stores dont even touch their animals I mean it you can contaminate a collection by taking on bad trip to the pet store some day.

adhesive strips :
Placing of insecticidal adhesive strips inside the cage is found to be
the best method to get rid of the mites. These stripes are hanged
inside the cage in a perforated container and kept out of reach of
the pet python. According to the vet's advice No pest ®
containing Vapona ® or ShellTox Mini Strip (TM) are kept inside
the container and inside the cage. These strips can be kept for
the suggested number of hours both inside and outside the cage.
Please take all the precautions like wearing a protective hand glove
while handling this poisonous strip. Please remove all cage
furniture and water bowls from the cage during the period of
exposure to this insecticidal adhesive strips.

Anti germ powders:
There are anti germ powders like “Neguvon” (Trichlorfon)
avilable in the medical shops. This anti germ and anti mite
powder is mixed in the water till it is dissolved and the python is
bathed in the water. You must take enough care to protect your
pet from getting the solution entering its eyes or mouth. You
must hold your python properly and apply the solution all over
its body. After some time hold the head securely and bathe the
python in clean water. Place the python in a separate clean bag
for two days. Then repeat the process. Use a fresh bag every time
you repeat the process. Apply this solution all over the cage and
remove the substrate completely to replace with a fresh substrate.

thanks to everyone for these helpful tips, I need them. Ever since I switched to news paper I have not noticed the mites,and it is a breeze to clean up. The more often I clean, the less chance of mites.

Start....I love Reptile Relief!!!!! It is an all natural way of getting rid of those little buggers. I went through this proccess with my baby Burmese just recently and so far; so good.

Take everything from the cage, and clean it with dish soap and a little bleach. Rinse and set aside for a couple of weeks.

Take the tank to the sink and scrub with dish soap and a little bleach...inside-outside...use a tooth brush to get into the crevasses (cracks)...Rinse, rinse, rinse and wipe until completely dry with paper towels. Check the paper towels for bugs....If you find any, wash, rinse and dry again.

Spray the entire tank, inside and out, with Reptile Relief...Lay down newspaper and spray it until it is quite wet.

Lay paper towels down...(ALL white), so you can check for bugs as you go...Spray your baby down and kind of massage so get it under her scales....We took a Q-tip soaked in Reptile Relief and rubbed sideways under her chin and found 8-10 of those little suckers hidding under her scales there. It took two of us to hold her to get this done, but it got done.

If the fumes inside the tank are irritating for YOU to breathe, don't put her back in until you can breathe the air comfortably. It has an odor even after it is dry, but it shouldn't make you gasp..

The next day I put a couple inches of water in a plastic shoebox, put my baby in to soak for 20 minutes, (She doesn't like it, so I had to put the lid on and just walk away)

Back to the sink with the cage...Bleach, dish soap, rinse, rinse, rinse, paper towels....Check.

Treat her cage again like the first time and do the beathing test....Dry off the baby with paper towels....Make sure you check inside the fold of skin around her eyes....If you see ANYTHING, dip a Q-tip in distilled water (very wet) and gently clean her eyes out. You may have to pull the skin fold back slightly to expose the inside of the eyelid...Gently, gently..

I went through this proccess four times....every other day....And I think I've got them licked!!!!

I think Kryshna actually liked the extra attention.....NOT!!! I put her rocks and her hide back in her cage last night and she is still hiding!!!

I have been checking her with one of those lighted magnifying inspection lights that clamps on to a table....The magnifying lens is about 7" or 8" wide....Nothing escapes me!!!!

That is one thing I like about reptile relief is that it is natural and non toxic. It does kill them. I know what you mean about " loving the attention" when I removed my snakes hide box for disinfection and returned the hide box, she stayed in there for days.

luckily not on this snake, but on another snake I had, I noticed that. Her eyes are clear.
