Just curious, breeding question

I was just curious about Ball Python breeding. What's the difference between Het Albinos and regular albinos? Also, often there is a % given, such as 100% or 50%. How is the percentage determined and what does it mean?

If I have a normal female and want to start breeding albinos, would I be able to create them with a het male or must I buy an albino male?

Normal to Het will produce all 50% possible hets
Normal to Albino will produce Het Albinos

The difference between a Het Albino and an Albino is that a het only carries one side of the albino gene and you need a pair of them to have an albino. Albino being a recessive trait, both the parents must have the gene to pass on to the offspring. The percentages represent the likely hood of the particular animal carrying the gene a 50% poss Het albino has a 1 in 2 chance of carrying the albino gene but it only visible in a homozygous state so you don't know until you breed it. So a het looks normal but carries the genes nescessary to make an albino. Hope this helps, there is a great link available here on basic genetics, sorry can't remember who has it but if you do a search on genetics you should find it.

albino x normal = all normals but all carrying the albino gene, thus the term 100% het for albino.
normal het for albino x normal het for albino = 1 in 4 will be albino and the normals have a 66% percent chance of carrying the albino gene.
normal het for albino x normal = all normals with a 50% chance of carrying the gene.
Cheers,
Trevor

In order to create an albino with a single male het albino and normal females, you would have to breed the two, then breed the male back to all the daughters.
