what does het mean?

i see this everwhere ...but what does het mean????

HET - Heterozygous- refers to a situation where the genotype of a particular gene is dissimilar (e.g. Aa); a heterozygous organism is often referred to as a carrier of a specified gene, which may or may not be expressed depending on the mutation (i.e. dominant, recessive, codominant).

Normally you can't visually tell if a snake is het for something.. but there are a scant few instances where it is possible.

Another term you will see is homozygous. This is where the animal expresses the mutation it carries, such as amelanistic (albino).
