Acceptable Minimum

Listed below are some snakes I am planning new enclosures for. I did think of going 'all out' on size but seeing the already large collection only growing further in the future, I have decided to scale back and house a bit more 'economicaly'. This does not mean shoving everyone into a rack however. I have settled with revamping all enclosures through Animal Plastics. Since I have started my set goals for incrimental savings to order about 3-4 enclosures at a time, I need to figure out the sizes each animal requires. My plan is to order larger sizes then use a divider, turning 1 enclosure into 2.

So, I would like some comments about the 'acceptable' minimum size per species.

Boas (not to exceed 6 feet full grown)
Brooks kingsnake
MBK
Male western hognoses
BPs (male/female)
Gopher snake
Spotted python
Ridleyi

I already have an idea of how to do this, just want to make sure I don't cut one species too small while another too large.

Re: Acceptable Minimum

Boas - 4 x 2
Kings - 2 x 2
Hognoses - 2 x 2
BPs 2 x 2 (big female 2 x 3)
Gopher 2 x 3
Spotted 2 x 2
Ridleyi - 4 x 2

You asked for minimums and this is what I would give for their minimums

Re: Acceptable Minimum

I agree with Aaron on those recommendations with one possible exception. I have my pits in 4x2s. I think a 3x2 would be a bit cramped for a decent sized pit but I have heard that gophers tend to be a little smaller than bulls so the 3x2 might work.

Re: Acceptable Minimum

I'm doing a Rack with the Christmas bins for a lot of my guys like the beauties and anyone that needs 4x2 when all grown up. Something you could try with some of your guys maybe. I was thinking about trying to put it together so I can do bioactive with it....I'm not very good at building things so we will see how that goes

Re: Acceptable Minimum

My non arboreal snakes only get 12-15 inches of height. My carpets will get the 2-4 ft. of vertical space.

Re: Acceptable Minimum

One could argue that even an arboreal snake doesn't know or care whether they're perched 5 inches off the ground or 6 feet. It's been demonstrated many times in the hobby but it's not something everyone agrees on of course. Food for thought. I would say do what works for you in regards to height.

Corn snake-same as the kings.

Re: Acceptable Minimum

Cool, thanks!

Now...corns? Lol

Was thinking 2x3 minimum but not sure.

Also, for stacking and cost purposes it looks like it will be 30 inches deep by 15 inches tall for most of the enclosures since I can't buy a 6x2x1 lol. (The plan is to use a divider to make these into 3x30x15 or 4x30x15)

Re: Acceptable Minimum

Depending on the species of you're offering some kind of climbing I'd go 16" tall. Makes it easier to clean vs 12 and my cages are only 24" deep. I would at least get one of each in the first batch and see how you like cleaning having the taller ones near the bottom will help cleaning and having 12" closer to shoulder height when kneeling.

My king will climb on the branches I provide. Even my BP climbs and lays on wood.
