Show ME!

Hi all,

So I'm nowhere near experienced enough to keep elapids. I love the cobras, gaboon vipers and death adders. Or the red bellied blacks. But they're all awesome, so I'd like if you elapid keepers could show some of your collection. I know some members like Nightflight have some gorgeous animals.

Cheers,
Herpo

Re: Show ME!

You listed two elapids and two vipers. There are a few venomous keepers on here so hopefully someone can help you out. I have not seen anyone on here that keeps Australian hots.

Re: Show ME!

There are a lot of cool pictures if you go to the venomous forum section.

As long as we are correcting people, he only mentioned one viper.

Herpo, if you have a Facebook there are a lot of venomous groups that are pretty busy. Viperkeeper's group is very active, my news feed is inundated daily with pictures of all sorts of beautiful animals I only dream of keeping.

Re: Show ME!

Interesting I always assumed death adders were vipers due to their looks. You know what they say about assuming.

Death adder are not true adders, they belong to the elapid family.

They really are pretty cool critters. Interesting how they evolved the form and function (ambush predators) of a viper, in an a part of the world devoid of vipers. They have one of the best caudal luring displays you'll see. They even have elliptical pupils, the only Elapid I'm aware of with elliptical pupils. I've won some bets with that information.

Re: Show ME!

Check out Jerry The Snake Man's Youtube channel, I know he keeps some Elapid's but not sure if he keeps anything Australian native. Viperkeeper does so check out his channel as well.

Interestingly enough this is called convergent evolution. The same thing happened with the GTPs of AU and the Emerald Tree Boas of the amazon. They both evolved very similarly since the continents split because the environments they evolved in were very similar to eachothers. I can only imagine this is the same case with the Adders and Vipers, only major difference being the SCARY AS ALL S**T folding fangs vipers have.

If there's one reason to like Australia, its our beef pies and the fact that we don't have those suckers trying to kill us, despite all the other things.

I saw an answer on Yahoo! about vipers, some dude said they have "3 inch fangs." Talk about misinformation. That gave me a laugh.

Two things. First, what's a beef pie? Second, I was under the impression that Gabon vipers had fangs in the 2-3" range. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I think gaboon fangs top out around 2 inches.

That is what I was led to believe, but I never measured all the gaboon fangs in the world to prove it.
