I've found that most reptiles will utilize verticality if given the opportunity. Even a terrestrial species like a leopard gecko will have have several feet worth of things to climb on in the wild. Let's even take a species native to your home state like a Texas rat snake. These are considered a classic terrestrial snake. However if you find one chances are it will be living on a rock, or near a dead log. That rock or log can easily take up 3 feet of vertical space. If the whole tree is dead it could have even more.
