Constant Heating?

Okay, I have 2 different brands of heat mats under my tank but both are very inconstant. I am going to the pet store tomorrow to get a thermostat to regulate it. Will that fix it being inconstant? If there is anything else you think I need to help, please share. I don't go to the pet store often and I want to get it all at once preferably...

Thanks!

A thermostat will take care of temperature regulation. A good inexpensive brand of thermostat is hydrofarm. Online on eBay and Amazon for around 30 bucks. Herpstat is a very good thermostat but will cost more

I would never run any heat source unregulated. The herpstat is an excellent choice, but expensive. You get what you pay for. I have never used the hydrofarm. At that pricepoint I am sure it is an on/off thermostat, compared to the herpstat geing proportional. You can run both mats off 1 thermostat, just remember you only will have 1 probe to read temperature with. A seperate thermostat for each cage would be the most accurate setup.

I have 3 hydrofarms and they are on/off tstats but have worked great the past few months. I will be upgrading to Herpstat in the future if/when they fail.

Re: Constant Heating?

Great! Thank you all!! I was just making sure about the thermostat... And yes I have now figure out that it is bad without a thermostat... But I have been constantly checking the temp, to make sure it never got to hot. Thanks again!!!

I can't see them causing problems for temperate colubrids. I have them because I just wanted something that would keep the warm spot in a decent range.

Re: Constant Heating?

I know we are taking heat mats and not tape, but I still think an unregulated heat source could suffer a similar demise. I know this is redundant, but not only could this cook your snake, it could start a fire.
