Too hot or too cold?

Hey guys, My UTH went out this morning on my MBK's viv. It's still under warranty and Zoomed is sending me a replacement heater for delivery next week. I have a 75 watt infrared bulb on now but it's got the warm side up to 95. If I turn off the light the temp in the viv is about 74 during the day and 70 at night. Is it best to have the warm side a bit hotter than the recommended 86 degrees, or to just leave the tank with no heat source for a few days? TIA for any input or advice.

Re: Too hot or too cold?

Its no so bad that the hot side is 95 "PROVIDED" you have the cool side at proper levels so it can thermo regulate properly. You do have a thermostat on the UTH right ?

Couldn't you just move the bulb a little further away? Also you can use a thermostat on a light as easily as on an uth.

KB- I just ordered (2) Hydrofarm thermostats from Amazon this morning. I know I should have gotten them sooner but...no excuses. The cool side is 74-76 right now. It dropped to 70 overnight which I don't think is too bad.

Re: Too hot or too cold?

74-76 cool side is just perfect. Just a reminder which I'm sure you know, Kinsnakes like to burrow and UTHs can get over 140deg without a thermostat.

I have two thermostats on my Kings. I keep one the UTH set for 85deg for belly heat and to keep the bottom of the enclosure warm. The other I have on a ceramic heater set for 90deg for warm end heat.

EDIT: Hydrofarms are VERY good mid range thermostats.

Hope this helps.

Thanks MBK, I admit I was wrong for not getting those thermostats sooner. I was monitoring the temps closely but I understand it's much better for me to regulate those temps as opposed to just monitoring them. I also realize the thermostats are a vital tool in taking the best care of my beloved pets. This won't happen again.

If your snake is fine and healthy there is no harm done. Glade to see your on the right road for you and your pet.

Taz (my MBK) is in shed right now. When he's done I'll post some picks. He's gained 950 grams.

Sweet! Once you get those hydrofarms dialed in, more peace of mind! They will take a little tweaking but are working fine for me. Easy to spot check with laser temp gun.

I feel you DC, I've got the t-stats on the way. I see it's a vital piece of equipment for taking care of our snakes.

How much does Taz weigh MBK? Isn't he close to 5' now?
