Padma
I just thought I'd show off this young girl we'll be taking in on Christmas Eve. My mother is getting her as a gift for my fiance but I'm absolutely in love with this girl. She's honestly a rehome.
Padma is a 2 - 3 year old Columbian Black and White Tegu. Her original family bought her from an expo and didn't handle her a whole lot. They then sold her to the people we're 'adopting' her from. The boyfriend bought her for his girlfriend, who admittedly thought she was going to get those infamous 'puppy tame' tegus you see on youtube. They've been working with her a lot but she's a college student and has realized she just doesn't have the time for Padma, and is also concerned about Padma's fascination for their cat.
Me and my mother visited her last week. While her enclosure could definitely use some improvements, she does have an exceptional diet(what they fed her when we were there was A LOT more diverse than the below picture) and was more than happy to dig in infront of us. She was a little shy and spent most of her time hiding under things in their home.
They say she enjoys sleeping under that heat mat in her tank and using it as a blanket... I just kind of question if she could potentially burn herself with that? Or are tegus smart enough to know when they're getting a little too crispy? I know they're very smart, I grew up with one. They say she knows how to take off the cage clips from the inside of the cage, which I really have no doubt of, lol! Gotta watch this girl real close.
Gonna spoil this girl, I just love her! Can't wait to start working with her.

Re: Padma
When you say you are improving the enclosure i hope you mean that you are throwing away the fish tank and building a decent sized home for it.
Beautiful lizard

Re: Padma
Wow, what a terribly small enclosure. That poor thing! Glad you will be rescuing her. I love Tegus and am very jealous.
I don't have the space or money to have one.

Re: Padma
OMG, how beautiful is he....he looks content being held. I hope he's smart enough to jump off that heat pad before he burns himself but I would put it on the other side of the glass, Im with the others, that poor guy need a proper size enclosure.

Re: Padma
Yeah, we aren't taking that tank or the heat pad with it. I was really shocked how small of an enclosure she was in when we visited. She'll be going in an 8ft long enclosure, 4ft wide, and 3 ft tall.

Re: Padma
Almost looks Argentine though. Don't Columbians have a slight goldish tint to them? Could be wrong of course.....

Re: Padma
Not sure... They said the breeder she was bought from said one thing(they didn't specify), and her previous family insisted that she was a he and that she was an Argentine despite what the breeder says, so they took her to our local exotic vet in town and they said she's female. Now, who deducedbshe's Colukbian, I' not sure. Not sure if it was them or the vet. All I know is she will be spoiled and very much loved!

Re: Padma
For an enclosure that small, she doesn't look nearly as obese as I would expect. Maybe it has something to do with the good diet you said she was being fed. Anyways, congrats, very cool.

Re: Padma
Nice looking Tegu, he should enjoy the new cage very much.
I can assure you, he is no Colombian, nor is he female. Everything about him says Argentine, including the name. "Black and white" Colombians do not exist. As far as sex... Check out the jowls on that big boy.

Hrmmm... Maybe I can ask the local expo runner around here if I could bring her in to havebher sexed. All I know is a vet said she wasn't a he. Dunno if popping hemipenes is safe on a lizard or an adult for that matter, nor would I know how to on a lizard, as I've kept primarily snakes. I just know her husbandry and temperment for her species, and what to expect from her as herself.
