What to get?

Hey everyone, I know I don't post too much on here, but I definitely would like some input from everyone. I have a spare 10 gal terrarium that used to house my leopard gecko when she was a baby before I upgraded her to the 20 gal. My reptile hobby is really something that I've wanted to put more attention too so I'm interested to see what people think would be a good idea to use it for.
I know its wayyy to small for most (if not all) snakes and I know I'm not ready for one yet so that's not so much of an option. Maybe another type of gecko/lizard or even an amphibians? Thanks guys, I appreciate your input .

I know you said no snakes but I think a Hognose could fit in a 10 gal...someone correct me if I'm wrong? Theyre so cute as well. But I'm just spit balling ideas.

Rather than trying to find a reptile to fill an otherwise unused very small terrarium, I would suggest that you do more thinking and research on what type of reptile you are most interested in having. If you keep an eye on Craig’s list, you can usually find outstanding deals on used terrariums or even snake cages that would be large enough to accommodate something you want rather than just something that can be housed in a 10 gallon aquarium. If you’re interested in snakes, then I am a huge fan of milk snakes as a beginner snake. They have beautiful colors (with lots of morphs to choose from), they’re easy to care for and tend to have laid back attitudes so you won’t need a snake hook or gloves to handle them. Also, many species of milk snakes stay relatively small so you won’t have to upsize your cage. Bottom line, take your time, do some more research and don’t be afraid to consider a larger aquarium as part of your purchase since you can buy them used for very reasonable prices. Just a thought…

Yes don't buy something to fit the cage, rather buy something you like and find a cage that fits it instead.

You can get a male garter snake. Or an Indonesian tree boa, if you set the tank vertical

I buy 20 - 60 gal. tanks at yard sales for $5.00-15.00 dollers. Got a long 40 large water dish 2 hides locking lid drift wood and my Cali King for $50.00.

Thanks everyone, and yes I have decided to put more thought into what I would like my next reptile to be as opposed to limiting myself. While I'm enthusiastic about gaining experience in keeping other species there's a little intimidation that comes with that as well which to me is just a signal to me that I need to do more research.
Kera - I'm a fan of hoggies too so adorable!!!
drumcrush - I've thought of garters, do you know of any reputable breeders in norcal?

May I suggest that you consider getting into fish? 10 gallons is really a small space for most any reptile. You could keep a very small snake in it, I suppose, like a dekay's snake, for example. But why not try fish?

All you need is some gravel, a bucket, a syphon hose with a gravel cleaner on the end, and a hang on back filter.

You can keep a lot of appropriately sized fish in a 10 gallon. Don't repeat the mistake you almost made here with reptiles and get an overly large fish for the 10 gallon though.

I would suggest killifish. They're colorful, active, easy to breed, and have very interesting behavior.



You won't need a heater with these guys.

DO cycle the tank first by either cycling with ammonia (google it) OR (this is much simpler) get some cultivated filter media from your aquarium store and put it in your filter. Then you can add fish the same day.
