Living Gems Litter Update

Sorry for the long post delay…I have been swamped. Here are a few more shots from Delivery Day:

The Nest, Early
If you closely, you can see Mom checking on her babies.

The Nest, Later
As above, but a few babies have left the nest…you can see the bright top of one exploring in front of it.

Moving Out
As one baby searches for the exit, another has found it.

Goodbye, and Be Safe
Mom watches another baby leave her care.

Thank you for looking,

Very cool and i love how red mom is. Them babies have some great genetics. I bet they all turn out to be lookers like mom.

Cool how the mom was checking on her babies.. Do they all do this, or is it a rare thing? what happens if, say, a baby comes out dead, or with a birth defect? Why is mom checking?

Re: Living Gems Litter Update

THank you all. Almandine is interesting color, kind of a brickish red-orange.

Hannibalcanibal, mother Brazilians typically nose through the baby pile. They will often eat any slugs, and sometimes stillborns. I have heard reports of them nudging babies to get them moving. That said..it's a pretty limited set of maternal instincts, and once the kids leave the nest site, she's more or less done.
