Gap in vision cage glass.

I know this is an enclosure question but it is specific to Crotalus. I've always been a little worried with how flat they can make themselves and the gap between the two panes of sliding glass in vision cages. I've been stuffing it with a paper towel rolled up small.

How big of a gap should I be worried about, would the width of their head be a good judgement on the smallest gap they could get through?

Does anyone else have this issue with the glass on vision cages, and if so what do you do to fix it?
