do adult jcp do much climbing?

I need build a good permanent cage for life for Oz. Does anyone think 4 ft tall is overkill? Do your adult jungles climb much?
I want to give him room to get some exercise but right now he tends to stay in one spot in his current cage which about the size of a 75 gallon. It may be because its too small for him to really get much out of it. I really feel he is in dire need of a larger cage at this point. But not sure the size to build, he is about 6ft and I doubt will grow more then a few inches more.

I think a 4x4x2 is perfect for carpets. He'll probably use whatever space you provide though.

Re: do adult jcp do much climbing?

My coastal is 16 months and my jungle is just over 3 months old. They're in a divided AP T8 (4x2x1) now. The floor and vertical space is cool for now but I definitely want to give them more room to climb. Their semi arboreal nature is one of the things I like most about them.

Re: do adult jcp do much climbing?

I am trying to decide if length or height is more important at this point. If he is going to spend 75 percent of his time on the ground then a longer cage might be the better option.
Thats why I was hoping that people with experience with adult jungles that dont do tubs/racks would put in some of advice.
I think even with 24 inches of height that shelves or large branches could still be provided for some exercise. But then he would need more length. I want it to be roomy but still save some space.
I am tossing around maybe doing 36 inches tall by 5ft wide.

Re: do adult jcp do much climbing?

Taller enclosures are hard to heat, one reason 24" tall is often the upper limit. I recently moved my larger young carpet python from a 20 tall aquarium into a 40 breeder, and placed the new baby carpet in the 20. I use a CHE over a screen top on the 20, and simply cut pegboard for the 40. Heat pads under both, but no CHE on the 40. Surprisingly, the larger carpet spends at least half the time lounging on a large branch in the open, where the ambient temp is around 72. The heat mat is inside the tank, with a 1'x2' ceramic tile on top of it to distribute the heat more evenly. There are 2 good-size ceramic caves stacked on the warmest end of the tile, so far I've never seen the lower one used. Highest temp in the enclosure is 95, on the surface of the large tile.

carpets are semi-arboreal snakes. if you can provide a perch/branch, they will very likely use it...mine all do. it helps provide vertical thermal gradients in addition to the horizontal gradients we all try to use.

mine are housed in an animal plastics "carpet cage". these have a basking shelf integrated.

Re: do adult jcp do much climbing?

My 4x4 works well for mine but a 5x3 would be good too. 2' high is too low for an adult jcp IMO.

Re: do adult jcp do much climbing?

I keep my 3 year old jcp in a 4x2x15 inches tall she seems pretty happy, she's got a branch to perch on and a shelf to bask on. She seems to divide her time equally among them.

Re: do adult jcp do much climbing?

I am leaning now toward 6x24x24, its not alot of height but several well placed shelves or branches would make climbing possible. He could really stretch out in a longer cage.I want to build two stackable cages of this size, I unfortunately cant stack if they are any taller.
