I always thought all colubrids were only capable of serpentine motion, if that is true, why can my king move rectilinearly? Is this some sort of mirage or what?

It is when a snake moves its scutes independantly to push itself in a perfectly straight line. Serpentine motion is the side to side motion oftenly seen in small bodied snakes, and rectilinear movement is the movement often seen in boas and pythons. name is actually I used the "ly" to fit the word into the sentance so it would be gramatically correct. :)

All snakes are capable of all types of motion. Their affinity to use sidewinding is probably small, the more "normal" types of motion however are useable by any species.

My Cali King used to rectilinear quite a bit, it's the snake's eqivalent to a slow walk in my mind.
