Hi! I have a baby corn snake. She's been with me for almost 2 months. She's friendly. I like her! I spot clean her cage at least 1 time daily. But the urine/urine-like odor in her terrarium is becoming a serious issue. Yesterday, I noticed that her cage reeked of urine. I changed all bedding, then wiped out the corners with anti-bacterial soap + water.

Still - there is an AWFUL odor. I end up taking the terrarium outside, hosing it down, scrubbing it with soap thoroughly. I put in new accessories since the old ones smelled.

Yet by today, my entire sitting room REEKS of urine! Um... What's going on here? :( I'm quite upset. When I first got her, it wasn't an issue. Now, even with cleaning and a fresh environment, the cage reeks of urine. Do you think she might actually have the odor on HER?

Please help! I'm desperate for opinions. Thanks...

What substrate do you use? And is it possible the snake is musking rather than peeing?

This may sound odd but try neutralizing the tank with your own urine.

are you certain it is the snake? (do you have any dogs or cats?)

I've not ever noticed a strong, ammonia, 'URINE' smell to any of my snakes messes.

This was why i was hinting at musk......

My Calli musked a lot, sometimes still does, after a good clean there is no smell.. my corn never musked so i don`t know if other snakes differ ?

I was thinking a cat maybe in the house or one gets access ??

Maybe try some vet quality anti-bacteria/anti-fungal disinfectant. Novasol is an example.

Have you tried keeping the snake in a plastic tub in one room for a few hours, with the tank in a separate room, to see which is the source of the odor?

When I had my corn (She got loose over half a year ago), her tank never smelled. Snakes don't seem like smelly animals. Anyways, could it be an infection or something? Or another one of your animals?

Hi everyone,

thanks for all of your support and concern. I've been extremely busy with work so I haven't had much time on my personal computer.

I have a cat but I inspected the area where the snake is and I don't think the cat is spraying. She never did anything like that when we had other pets in the house years ago.

I'm not sure why, but fortunately it appears that the urine-y smell is not there anymore. I'm thinking that maybe, it could have been the extreme humidity in the house making the bedding smell. For some reason, when I use my daytime heat lamp, the odor got worse. I'm not sure why... but yes, in general, the odor is not as strong anymore. Nicole [snake's name] has never musked on me either.

sorry if you posted this somewhere/i missed it, but what kind of bedding do you use?
i sometimes find that damp aspen has an odd smell to it.
Ive never found a smell issue with coco husk or cypress mulch...
But i use aspen for all my colubrid snakes.
