Are there any noticable differences in behavior between the two in general? For example, is one species more aggressive, energetic, shy...etc than the other?

I can't speak to jungles, but my Irian Jaya is active, loves to climb, has a feeding response that is huge. He is only about 10 months old and I would say cool as can be for a young one. Once he knows it's me he calms down and wants to climb on my hands/arms and is very curious. I don't go putting my hand in his enclosure willy nilly, as he does have that big feeding response and would likely strike without first checking to see if it's food or not.

From things I have read, I think the major differences between IJ and jungles would be size as adults.

Size as adults for sure. Jungles are bigger but with carpets being thinner longer snakes this is seldom an issue. IJ's tend to be less nippy as babies. Other than that there is little to no difference in behavior or temperments.

out of all the carpets ive seen...

imo jungle hatchlings are more agressive defensive biters, where the irian hatchlings tended to be more nervous wanting to hide out the way

all my adult Jungles and Irians, pretty much act the same, some bite some don't

cheers shaun

Both are awesome snakes! Everything I have read, and all of the hatchlings I have handled back up what the guys above me were saying about jungles being a bit more nippy as young snakes. If you get a baby, the bite does not really hurt, and if you handle either one, they will generally calm down and make awesome pets. The jungles average out around two feet longer, but the length of these snakes should be viewed relative to their girth as well. A 7' jungle is not hard to handle. For instance, this is what a 3' carpet looks like. (Irian Jaya)

Easy to handle for sure. This is a 7.5' jungle.

Jungles are larger than IJs.

If a placid snake is important to you, you should definitely handle it before you buy it. Most Carpets are calm as adults, but some are aggressive for life.

In my opinion, IJs are more likely to be placid than Jungles, but other people on this site have a lot more experience than me..

Size is relative to how you feed.
Almost all of my carpets are around the same size regardless is they're a jungle, coastal or IJ. Sure in their native ranges (and depending on what food source is available to them) they can be considerable size differences.
I've owned and produced at least 1000 carpets over the years and that's what I've learn. An animal will grow in relation to how it's fed. Of course, there are the ones we like to feed or the one that doesn't want to eat every time and those variables will also dictate how big they get.
As far as temperament....they're all individual and subject to individual attitudes. I've had bitey carpets from every species and placid ones as well.

Cheers,
D
