i am making some nice perches for my jcp. iv seen alot of pic of people useing pvc pipes as perches and never dowles. is there a reason for this or is it ok? the do not specify what kind of wood it is it just says hardwood.

i've never owned an arboreal snake, but i will offer the following:

I think it is hard to come by wooden dowels of the appropriate girth in order to make an appropriate perch for an ADULT CP, and additionally, a 3inch diameter wooden dowel would be much much heavier than a 3 inch diameter length of pvc.

It depends on your cage design, the size of your snake. etc.

I cant think of any reason NOT to use wood, other than weight, but maybe someone with CP experience will chime in.

I use hardwood dowels for my younger carpet pythons and they work well. Definitely won't be good enough for an adult carpet as I think I have only seen them up to 1" dia.

This is one of mine on her 3/4" dia dowels

I use PVC for my gtp since its easier to work with and secure and I don't have to worry about the humidity affecting the integrity of the wood also mold and whatever else. Not to mention if they somehow get dirty (poop or she busts a rat) its easy to disinfect and clean

You can get them bigger, though they are harder to find. They sell 2" dowels at my local hardware store. I use them in one of my enclosures (high humidity enclosure for a GTP). I just used a polyurethane seal on it and never had any problems with mold, cleaning, etc.
