Is the black dragon another species? I thought it was just like the 'night niles' at BHB. Also, can these albinos see well or are they like the albino niles / iguanas?

Varanus salvator komaini. They are their own ssp.

Is vital the only person in the US with these?

Nah, tons come into the country, most end up in the hands of morons and die quickly, or live terrible lives. Compared to most quality reptile collections, vital exotics is top notch, and blows away the competition in terms of caging and care.

Thanks for the compliments guys. The "Black Dragons" used to be looked at and classified as a subspecies up until a few years ago, when they were re-classified as basically a melanistic Salvator. Plus there have always seemed to be different localities of the Black's not necessarily a separate species or sub-species due to many degrees of varying head and body structure. The Blacks are fairly rare here. They used to come in wild caught here and there over the years, but they are and were very hard to deal with (being WC) and most have not ended up in proper care. They have only been bred (mated, laid and hatched out offspring) so far by one person worldwide, a friend of mine, Quetzal in Costa Rica, and that was 4-5 yrs ago. I should have some in a few months as well as the Black X High Yellow locality crosses. I really enjoy working with this species. They are great if you are up for the work and commitment.

So ur saying varanus komaini is now no longer a sub sp of salvator ?????
As I knw melanism happens in alot of the sub sp but to me that look a seperate sub sp .....
As it looks to me a komaini breeding with a different sub sp maybe a bivittatus ??? If so should that mixing of sub sp b happening .. ??

V 87...V. Komaini is no longer a sub-species like I said above. There have always been "Black Dragons" that seem to have different structures, etc suggesting that there are more than one locality with all Black Salvators, so basically, when V. Komaini was looked at as a sub-species, there were other Black ones who should not have fallen under its classification anyways, due to differences. I have bred my Reptile Guru male (Marmoratus X Macromaculatus cross) to my female Black Dragon.

How much are you going to sell the blacks for (an arm and a leg?) , and have any ideas what the cross will look like?

smy_749...I have to see what the Black X High Yellow clutch hatches out as, before I price anything. If the melanistic gene is simple recessive then the Black ones will be harder to make, which will make them more expensive for me to produce and take more work. If it is dominant or Incom Dom, then they will be easier to produce, so I can make the price lower. Ok...so I have a question...the pics of the monitors outside...is that part of their "habitat/enclosure/etc" or do you let them out to run around? And if you do, how in the world do you get them back into their enclosure?

stephanbakir

Well trained monitors are actually pretty good when you let them roam, my sav came to me hen I clapped my hands because it meant food, i let him roam, go for swims in the pond and he always came when you clapped.
He got scared once by a car horn and burrowed under a tree, took me a while to get him out, but outside of fear they generally are pretty good.

I don't speak for him and his monitors, but I'm assuming its the same idea

...You trained a reptile to come when you clap your hands? That's amazing.

I say train, but really its just getting them used to the routine of hearing a sound and ascociating it with food...
I don't know what they do at vital exotics, that's just my method.

Hi, as you say the "Black dragon" (komaini) is just a synonym for V. salvator macromaculatus.
They`re looking even more stunning if that`s possible, you and they are doing so well, good for you all! (Don`t forget you`re sending me a female dirt cheap with free shipping)..... ;)
How big and what age is the male walking outside?

Thanks guys....I have a few males who I can take outside at our private land and let roam with supervision. The one male in the photos is 7.5 feet long, and 4.5 yrs old. I have another male here that is 9' +, and 6 yrs old, he is a beast, and they both swim and wander about and do great outside, even with my dog running around and other family members around. They even swim in the ponds with the dog and myself, but I worked with them for quite a while in controlled settings before I allowed them so much freedom. I will post more photos and videos of this soon. Its great to see the animals get the exercise and stimulation that an afternoon in the sun, woods and water provides. I can spend all day watching a Salvator cruise around a big pond looking for frogs and exploring, its great to see.

I assume you're breeding the albino, if so how much would a hatchling of one of those go for?

Ha ha. Thanks guys. Its is great to be able to work with these guys on a daily basis, it is a lot of work and stress at times also, but it comes with the territory.

Akuma223, my male Type 2 Albino is almost ready to breed, I will need to wait to determine pricing until I get eggs and them closer to hatching (incubation is almost 7 months) and it will also depend on what I breed him to (Black Dragon, High Yellow Sumatran, or Type 2 Albino Het), as the outcoem of each will be different. Keep in touch with Reticulated Pythons | Ball Pythons | Water Monitors | Black Dragons | Crocodile Monitors | Vital Exotics (http://www.vitalexotics.com) or my Facebook.com/vitalxreptiles page and we can go from there. Thanks again everyone!
