Spanish Vrs. Sphgnam moss ..?

Other than the cost/texture is there any real difference between the two?
I know Sphgnam is marketed as reptile/amphibian moss - but is using spanish moss harmful to reptiles ?

Spanish moss doesn't grow on the ground, its typically hanging/left to dangle. And its white and spaghetti like.

I have witnessed animals getting caught in Spanish moss it is very strong and has very long fibers.

Spanish moss is not actually a moss, it's a type of air plant. It doesn't retain moisture and is acidic in nature. Therefore it is not good to use in place of sphagnum

I love live sphagnum moss unfortunately it doesnt grow so well on top soil from my experience

I will stick with using sphagnum moss then. I was just curious as I visited a craft store with a couple friends earlier and noticed Spanish moss was a good deal cheaper. I also knew there was probably a reason, I had just never really cared to look into it. Now I just have to find a place that sells sphagnum for a reasonable price. I am sure there are places cheaper than petsmart/petco. Time to actually do my own search.

They sell live spanish moss at your local craft stores? I've never actually seen it for sale around here.

Try Ebay, there are growers that sell huge bags of it cheaply.

sphagnum moss is probably cheapest at Lowes or Home depot. Look for it in the orchid section. Don't get the Miracle grow brand. It has fertilizer in it which could keep it from growing. If you even want it to grow. New Zealand sphagnum is the best for the color and lack of sticks and leaves, also grass grows out of the other species. New Zealand Sphagnum is rather expensive though.

I grow carnivorous plants and use it all the time. Check out some carnivorous plant forums and you can learn how to grow it yourself and never have to buy it again. I don't grow it because I only replant once a year and its super cheap, but it grows, without my help, from the dry stuff I buy. Hope that helps!
